Does anyone else find it EXTRAORDINARILY painful to walk in flip-flops if sand has gotten onto your feet? My family gave me funny looks when I mentioned this, but it seriously feels like broken glass/sandpaper to me. :?

I like flip flops in summer because they keep my feet cool. They can be uncomfortable. I was wearing a pair the other day and suddenly I felt a pain in my second toe, caused by the thong in the flip flop. It felt like I jolted a nerve. I had to take the flip flop off and wait for the feeling to cease. I thought the pain would go away when I took it off but it lingered for around thirty minutes. I couldn't put pressure on that part of my foot when I walked without some discomfort. Finally, it went away on its own and I returned to the flip flop state of euphoria. So, yeah, they can be unbearable at times.

I haven't been to the beach in a long time (about 18 years!), but I have felt sensations similar to sand on my foot and find them to be very unpleasant. For example, I eat most of my meals in my bedroom, so occasionally I get toast crumbs on my bed. If I am in bed and all of a sudden feel a sharp little crumb pressing into my foot it startles me and I need to remove it right away, even though it is often no bigger than a grain of sand. So I definitely don't think I would like sand in my shoes.

I never wear flip flops because I have to grip them tight with my toes to prevent them falling off, and then I have to shuffle in order to not lose them. Flip flops are horrible in my case. But I wear sandals. And yes, the feeling of sand under my feet makes me feel extremely nauseous. I have hypersensitive touch, especially on my feet. So I can relate.

Try wearing socks with sandals. :D Really it helps a lot. I heard it's even IN now. There are toe socks you can buy if you have to wear flip flops.

I can't wear flip flops or sandals, they make my feet hurt. I prefer to go barefoot as much as possible.

I sort of like the sensation of walking on sand barefoot. But if anything gets in my shoes, it is agonizing. It often seems like a huge rock is in there, but it ends up being nearly undetectable to the eye.
I dislike flip flops as well.
