…denied my Asperger's diagnosis that I've had since two and has been confirmed multiple times down the years by various health professionals. But he didn't know why.

Strange man.

In fact, he didn't even know what characterised Asperger's!

It was brilliant.

Some drs can be clueless indeed!

I tend to find that psychiatrists are obsessed with depression and anxiety. Every symptom you ever have will always be attributed to either one or both of those, especially if you already have them on your record as an earlier diagnosis. You could walk in with a missing head or leg and the diagnosis would be that of depression and anxiety.

Even gps are the same.

I am beginning to think they should market anxiety and depression as the cure for everything. Once you have it you seem to be immune to everything else. They could make a fortune!

Heh heh heh. Agreed.

Yeah, what a gem of a doc that guy was. Outstanding. I wonder sometimes how these people manage to get a degree... and then are allowed to be in charge of people's mental well being. Kind of scary, really.

"You don't have Aspergers...wait. What characterizes Aspergers again?"

How can one be a practicing psychIATRist and not know this? 8O

It just flew right over his head. In that case, it's not funny.

You guys are scaring me. I'm going to my doc May 10th to get a referral to a psychiatrist (I cannot afford private clinics who diagnose Aspergers). So i'm forced to get a referral to a sh***y government paid psych who probably won't even know what AS is and tell me I have depression (thanks tips....).

If he has no knowledge of AS and/or nothing with which to back up his claim, then he is bogus and shouldn't be taken seriously.

I'm assuming he thinks he's the psychiatry god.

That's why I initially thought that I could never find a professional who knew anything about Asperger's Syndrome, though I was lucky, somewhat. The current psychologist has worked with children with AS, not adults, but there are some parallels.

I never thought there was a difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist except that a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, but apparently there are more differences than I thought, especially reading about Tequila's experience and others on WP. I'm not sure how thing work in the UK, but for me I could get prescriptions from my doctor if I needed them. Doctors are pill pushers anyway, mine is. I chose to do it the CBT route, rather than the medicated route, because the bad experience with sertraline (Zoloft). I was going to try Cymbalta as a replacement for sertraline, but the side effects were just as bad. From then on, I never trusted SSRIs and SNRIs.

I then tried St. Johns Wort, but that just made me irritable. I then tried vitamin B6 and magnesium with the advice of my first psychologist, but that never really helped either. I tried lecithin, large amounts, nothing would reduce anxiety, which was why I took anything in the first place.

That's when I decided to seek out CBT to see if that will help. It has slightly, but I only went for 5 sessions so far.

I think psychiatrists just don't have a conception of Aspergers and autism, because it is not something that can be treated by medication. They are all about the pills.

I think if I go for diagnosis I will have to save up, and go and see a private psychologist, because my psychiatrist will just laugh at me.

Sorry you've had this experience.

The previous consultant I saw (before this one) also didn't know what Asperger's Syndrome was either.
