So, during high school lunch, what did you do?

Personally, I got on the library computer and started typing to various internet forums. I also pursued the occasional multi-variate calculus problem.

There was half of the freshman year where I belonged to the freaks-and-dweebs table before being rejected from the group (I don't know why -- maybe I was too aggressive? I had too bad of a reputation? Too "weird"? I.e., "too autistic" or "too mentally ill-esque"?), and then there was another half of my 11th grade year where I hung out with a friend engaging in Tech support on the campus. I also spent half of that year hanging out with someone else in the dugouts, which was definitely an interesting experience.

At school, I have this room (that I think I should start a separate thread about) and I eat in it during lunch. I am supposed to stay in there, but I sometimes get a drink from the vending machine, I don't know if I am supposed to do this, but I do.

I spent half my lunches with my friends.

When my friends acted-up I would go home for lunch; by 'acted-up' I mean generally one week everyone being friends then the next week alliances changing so sometimes with me being ganged-up upon or with different friends threatening to kill each other (think English working-class version of the film 'Mean Girls'). There were a few 'outcasts' I spent time with, some IT nerds, and one guy who's family did those whole 'Jesus Saves' talks in school...no one talked to him as a result, unfortunately he also happened to be a nut-job who ended-up stabbing a Japanese guy in the face with a bread-knife, so for a while after that I went home for lunch too as everyone started to avoid me in case I did the same. *shrugs* I pick 'em

I'd pop into the shop on the way home to get lunch, then eat at home before going back to school.

I used to hang out with some friends eating lunch, or a group of us stayed inside the class room, playing flash games, such as Robot Unicorn Attack.
I have no problems socializing with close friends, but when I have been social for a while (i.e the whole school day) I feel the need to recharge.

Either stuck my finger down my throat or did sit-ups in the bathroom until the bell rang.

I liked the school food, even though the other boys tended to complain about it, but I felt so uncomfortable sitting at a table with the other boys (I can no longer remember exactly why, as this was about 47 years ago) that I asked not to have school meals, and to have sandwiches on my own instead. I still quite vividly remember eating the unappetising dry cheese sandwiches my mother made. This was all on my own, standing up, in a locker room (no benches or seats, just lockers) which for some reason always smelled of stale milk, and missing the school meals which I liked, just because I couldn't bear being with other people. This was in my first year at secondary school, when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I also remember later (perhaps much later, in the sixth form, or perhaps earlier, I'm not sure) being allowed to eat my sandwiches, still alone, in an unused classroom. This was less unpleasant, and I think by then the sandwiches had become more varied and enjoyable as well, and perhaps I even had something to drink, which I don't remember having at first. (There were water fountains, which was perhaps what enabled me to get those dry sandwiches down my throat; or perhaps I got tea in a Thermos flask, but just can't remember it.) I keep remembering this as one of the first clear indications to me that something was very "wrong" with me, but it wasn't an indication that anyone else took any notice of, not officially at any rate.

My school actually got in trouble with some oversight somebody or other for allowing students to eat whatever amount of food they were willing to pay for. The horrors.
Teenaged boys are ravenous, in particular. Three tater tots is not a serving.

The food was awesome, though. Pizza every day in one line, the other had a "home cooking" type deal with steak, mashed potatoes, peas, etc. I got a half-salad when I ate at all. There was one other line that I don't remember, but you get the picture.

I had no choice but to sit in the cafeteria, regardless of whether I had or could afford to buy food, so I sat with the burn-outs. They weren't my friends, but they were only ones who let me sit with them.

I would take my lunch and go eat outside to avoid having to be around people, regardless of whether it was -20C outside or not

That does sound pretty cool.

 The only thing I hate more than that crowded cafeteria is the cold, and it's against the rules to eat outside for some reason, so when it's not freezing, I force myself to eat in there, then go read outside.

I brown-bagged it, and ate my lunch in the library.

The high school lunch food was actually pretty good.

We didn't have internet, or really general access to computers when I was in high school. Mostly I'd get my food and then find someplace to sit alone and read a book. This was usually outside, but it would get too wet and rainy for that (Grew up in Oregon). Indoors, I had a few places, but sometimes I sat with other people. Sitting with other people was generally a confusing and frustrating affair because it was so noisy and crowded, and I was really more interested in reading my books.

I'm Canadian so I'm pretty accustomed to it  . There probably were rules against eating outside but I didn't eat on the school campus, I had a little place I would go and read and eat that was also kind of sheltered from the wind
