Either in college, unemployment, or employment.

After getting a diagnosis, how was the process of getting help in 1 or all of the above?

I am considering getting a diagnosis, just because I am not doing very well in college and am unemployed.
Someone who I was talking to suggested I get some sort of advocate to help me in college?
Not sure how all that works.....

Also how bout those on disability or whatever they call it these days?
How was that process?

Anyone get a decent job from seeking help?

Any experience/story welcome =)

My official dx is in 2 days. I need it for University (college). I have been before and i had a hard time of it then. But now as a single mum of two kids, my meltdowns are far more intense and can last for longer but i cant actually release anywhere. I have a lot on my plate and i need the extra help.

What extra help are you hoping to get?

Services? What services? I got nothing but an offer from my GP to get me antidepressants or sedatives.

well these would be services you would have to seek out from government agencies or college faculty...though i don't know how it all works which is why i am asking.

I pay to see a clinical psychologist. It is expensive.

Universities in Australia have free counseling that anyone can access (diagnosis or not). And you can access "disability services" that may help you decide what it is that you need help with and advocate for you (eg. adjustments to classes/environment/assessments etc).

Because it depends on where you live, your best bet may be to contact your main state or country aspergers association. They should know what you can access.

I have a disability liaison, I do my exams in private. I have one on one time with my tutor. I have flexible deadlines (only with a medical certificate if i have a full meltdown) ect.

As far as I know there's nothing for adults in the UK. I'd love to be proved wrong though.

I've been diagnosed Friday June 26th 2003. I don't use services, there aren't any. It's a joke the only thing is a monthly social group which I only found out about last October.

If you can't find disability services within your college or uni, you could try talking to someone in the psychology or linguistics departments as they tend to have an interest in helping people out with stuff like AS. Also, if there are no disability services available, the very least you should do is talk with your professor or department head.

Having been diagnosd by a pychometric assessment group that s attatched to the uni that I go to, they are recommending a scribe for my exams - because I have enormous difficulty getting my thoughts to paper, but my verbal performance is considerably better. Whether I get a scribe or not is yet to be seen.

I suppose there's the NAS. Last time I looked, they were saying that they had stuff that diagnosed autistics could access, but when I asked them (pre DX) what those things were, they didn't tell me. They sent me a useful reply when I asked their advice about applying for DLA, but their assistance there was limited and the claim didn't succeed.

I believe there's some guy in Lougborough (UK) who does group therapy for couples containing Aspies, and that he doesn't charge much at all, just a couple of pounds or so. OK if you live nearby and feel like jumping into a group of new people and sharing your relationship problems with them......

Clutching at straws here..... :(

I have the Adult Autism Waiver in my state (PA), where I get 25 hours of community inclusion, behavioral support staff, job coaching, and lots of other stuff that I'm currently not using at no cost to me for the rest of my life.

hmm how come you dont ant to use any of those? have you before?

Seems as if those in europe have very little access to anything in the way of help.

Australia seems decent though a lengthly process.

Here in the US...i'd say we have it pretty decent. (That is not to say there isn't room to improve)

I live in washington state way over on the opposite side.
