I convinced my Mum to let me go to the doctors to get tested for Autism/Aspergers.
She said that she wants me to get tested for Autism only because apparently in Australia they don't offer help with Aspergers.

Has any other Australia had problems with this?
A doctor once said he believed I had Autism & Aspergers when I was a little kid, but he wasn't legally allowed to diagnose me with it.
Things might be easier for me once I get diagnosed~

As you may be aware, the next version of the DSM (the official guide for medical and psychological professionals) will probably eliminate the designation "Asperger's" and include those previously diagnosed with Asperger's as part of a new "Autism Spectrum Disorders." Anyone who would be making the diagnosis would be aware of this and might affect his decision.

I would do a little research about this first, if you are not already familiar with this. Good luck!

I wasn't aware of this, and I didn't understand at the same time...
I will research this, thank you for telling me this.

I'm from Australia, and I've never heard it to be illegal to diagnose Autism. I got a proper diagnosis in 1999.
In terms of help available, I'm not too sure. All my help came at school :-p

Reguardless of what's going on with the DSM, I hope that you find some answers. I think it's wonderful that your mum has decided to support you in this. I know of a lot of people here whos mums are in denial.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers 10 years ago (in Australia), and I've found I can and have gotten support with this diagnosis. Whether you are diagnosed with Aspergers or HFA is irrelevant, because even once the new DSM-V is introduced those previously diagnosed with AS are still Aspergers and I'm fairly certain are still eligible for help they so far receive.

My Mum said to me just now that the doctors never took her seriously.
Even now some adults have said that they've noticed these symptoms in me, even some doctors.

We need to see a specialist I think.
It makes me sad because I could've been diagnosed sooner, and I might never had the depression I did back then, I could've still been in school getting aid and support

She says that Australia gives no support for this still.

I was officially confirmed to have autism/Asperger's by an Egyptian psychologist. ;)

Do you live in Melbourne or elsewhere? If in Melbourne, let me know. So I search for his contact info.

I still think anyone seeking a diagnosis should be familiar with the situation. It's hard to say how it would affect the person in charge of saying yes or no to a DX, but it might. If nothing else, the discussions following the evaluation might be affected by the proposed changes, if only in the terminology.

Yeah, that was a main problem for us back in Melbourne.
We struggled with money so much. I was lucky to even have a decent meal for Dinner.
Not enough money to spare for Breakfast and lunch.
I think it costs thousands of dollars just to get diagnosed?
