Currently my mind is a little off-balance - you know when lots of little stupid things are getting to you at once and your mind just feels like it's spinning out of control, limiting your ability to think logically and not make a fool of yourself...the feeling of lots of things coming at you at once, and like any moment something else will come along and trigger off a meltdown...

I have an exam at college tomorrow, I'm already anxious as it is and I really can't afford to miss another exam due to meltdown. My anxiety levels are through the roof, I know that a meltdown is a possibility...other than taking over-the-counter herbal remedies to calm myself down, anyone else any ideas on how I could try to prevent myself going into a meltdown tomorrow or how to lessen my anxiety?

As your title suggests you should just have a pre-emptive one. Sometimes it is good to get all the frustration out, in the privacy of your own room.
Or you can write your feelings down or discuss them with someone.

Are you taking anything for anxiety? See when I have anxiety I can quickly get control of the thoughts. Sometimes I need a distraction or sometimes I just need to access the situation calmly. It does take a lot to get there though.

I can't force myself into a meltdown and have no one to talk to about my feelings.

Nope, not taking anything for anxiety.
Still struggling to understand that this feeling is one of anxiety.

Pizza and beer?
Bach's rescue remedy, perhaps?
Breaking glass and shouting at the top of your lungs, if you can figure out a safe way to do it?

This really does sound like an excellent preemptive measure to me. Go someplace out away from all people and just let all the frustrations and emotions out where nobody can hear you.

the best way is to actually search for the strongest meltdown triggers you can get; either inside yourself or externally; the carnival is a surefire way to meltdown if you are already on a hair-trigger; there's noise, light and other people there :P
something i can also recommend is learning to meditate; i obtained the ability to do some swith meditation without even passing out or needing extreme solitude (noone even seems to notice if i do that over dinner), which allows me to lower my anxiety significantly for a bit; delying a meltdown for several hours; sufficient to finish an exam or what have you.
