Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've suspected that I have had Asperger's for about 4 months now. It all started when I started learning about Autism to be able to better relate to children with Autism that I work with. Previously I just had the vague idea that it was something to do with learning difficulties.

I began to relate to much of what I was reading, having always been something of a "weirdo", with poor social skills, poor motor co-ordination, and an obsession with learning about space, more specifically exo-planets, along with various other symptoms associated with Asperger's.

Having took the AQ test and scoring 42, and various other tests found online (most through this forum, thank you!) I thought it was time to take action. I contacted the NAS who emailed me some leaflets and suggested I talked to my GP. I was absolutely terrified during the build up to the appointment after reading some of the horror stories of people with ignorant GPs.

My visit turned out to be very pleasant and relieving. After having an ear infection checked, he asked if there was anything else and I simply came out with it - "I think I have Asperger's". He was very sympathetic, listened to my concerns and a brief outline of my symptoms, and resolved that something must be done. He is going to refer me to a specialist in Sheffield (the details of which were provided by the NAS).

I had prepared a folder with a letter in case I was unable to get the words out, and an outline of my major symptoms. I had printouts of all the tests that I took and the leaflets and info that the NAS emailed me. Luckily I hardly had to use my folder, as he was very understanding, revealing that he already has several adult patient's with Asperger's.

I am now on the road to a diagnosis, and hopefully a resolution to many difficulties throughout my life, especially with family and work (I have the feeling that many family members and colleagues feel that I dislike them as I am distant and unwilling to converse, though this is untrue). I am also being held back in applying for new jobs, always coming 2nd at interview. Usually I am the most technically proficient but they feel that I wouldn't be easy to get on with around the office. This has happened 4 times now, each interview for a dream job of mine. Hopefully if diagnosed then Equality laws will help protect me from this.

Sorry for rambling on, I'm just so relieved that all went well. I feel like vomiting and crying and I have no idea why!
