The story is too long and complicated to give in detail, but the short of it is I moved into a house with friends because the rent was great (400 plus utilities) in a great part of town close to work and now through a series of disasters I find myself almost certainly going to have to move out.

I don't know what to do! I have to have a one bedroom...I live in the main area like a studio, and use the bedroom for my work area (I'm a filmmaker and animator). But those are pricier of course, if you want a good area, which is important. I was robbed in my apartment (guy broke in while I was there very traumatic), and I just won't do a bad area even if the apartment is cheap. Roomates are completely out, because so far every roomate I've had (with one exception) was misery, and quite honestly, I f*****g hate people to their rotten cores.

But I don't know where I'll come up with the money. I'm doing alright, but a freelancer's budget can be quite variable, and I worry about keeping my overhead low. The other option is moving home, but I would have to blow my brains out if I did that.

What the f**k do I do? God I f*****g hate my life sometimes. Make that most of the time.

Sometimes they have houses which have rooms for rent; over here, they post ads in the local supermarkets.

You don't get individual bathrooms or kitchen, but your room's your own and I found the other tenants tend to keep to themselves.

A very quick and dirty emergency stopgap would be to find the cheaper campgrounds available to you, so you will have a place to flop in a pinch. It's less expensive than a hotel, and you wouldn't be staying around for more than a day or so. If you have an unreliable income, you should know how to rough it when you have to.

Next, Craigslist. Craigslist has pretty much taken the place of newspaper ads in many metropolitan areas because it's cheap. You can often find people on there offering you a semi-renovated closet or something you can rent pretty much for a song. Wait for a good offer. Bring your flyswatter, boric acid and roach spray. And have one of your friends come along with you packing heat because there are some really messed-up people out there. Even a toolshed you have to share with someone's dog, though, is better than a tent.

Besides that, all I can do is wish you luck.

There are only so many options for inexpensive housing, and each one has its drawbacks.

1. Bad part of town. Crime and hooliganism.

2. Distant suburb not convenient for commuting. Spend all your money commuting.

3. Roommates. Possible disaster.

4. Move in with parents. Drive you mad.

5. Sub-standard basement apartments. Dark and moldy with spiders.

Anything decent in a nice part of town will be expensive. You'll wind up having to choose from the possible evils, according to your priorities.

It depends on where you are located, but for $400 in most places, you should be able to get a guest apartment behind a house, or a finished loft over a barn, etc., in a nice area. If you're in a major city; especially NYC or Los Angeles, you might have to think about moving outside the city to find that price for a safe area. But just do your homework NOW, before you wind up with 2 days to look, and have to settle for something awful. I speak of experience there....
