According to my mom, dinosaurs were my earliest special interest. I remember having loads of books about them and a lot of plastic dinosaur toys, and I also enjoyed TV shows and movies about them like The Land Before Time, the 90s sitcom with dinosaur puppets simply called Dinosaurs, and to a lesser extent Jurassic Park. My favorite dinosaurs were the Tyrannosaurus rex and the velociraptor.
Heh.
In Kindergarten I freaked out my teacher by writing "Tyrannosaurus Rex" on something.
My mother wrote something up for my therapist to explain my history, and she described my special interests as a child. My therapist dismissed them as "not really related to autism" because the topics included dinosaurs and Star Wars.
I tried to explain the difference between really loving something and eating, breathing, drinking, thinking, living something for every waking minute, relating everything back to it, talking about it, collecting everything that is remotely related to the topic.
Then she said "Well, ADHD can be like that too."
