Aspies with limited interests?

I was just wondering how true this is. I know I have my share of limited interests. Mine are basically more anime and music related. I don't get into things as much as I used to. I was just wondering if there are any aspies or autistics out there who actually get into their interests that they become completely absorbed into them.

I do when comes to writing. I can become so absorbed in my writing that there are times when I don't even know what is going on around me. I'm not sure if writing is an interest. I do have a HUGE interest for Alice in Wonderland. I get completely excited whenever someone even mentions those words and start talking about it. I love everything that has to do with Alice.

I have many interests but they're eclectic in the literal definition of the word: "selecting what seems best of various styles or ideas." I'll latch on to a certain writer but won't read other writers in the same genre. I'll latch on to a certain band but won't listen to other bands in the same genre.

The way you describe your interest in Alice in Wonderland is relatable. I get that way with Stoker's Dracula. (Although I don't generally like vampire stories. Go figure.) Two therapy sessions ago, my psychologist mentioned that he recently watched the film Nosferatu on YouTube. (It's a 1922 adaptation of Dracula, in case you don't know.) I got excited and flew into a flurry of trivia I knew about the film, and when I was done, I had no idea how long I'd been talking. I wonder if he was testing me to see if I would do that.

It's the same with a few other interests. I can list all 22 James Bond films and all 28 Godzilla films, in order by date, without error, and tell you a whole lot of useless trivia about each one. (Yes, each one.) Quote a Sherlock Holmes story and I can very likely tell you which of the 60 stories it came from. But am I interested in other spy films, monster films, or mystery stories? Of course not.

As for becoming so absorbed in something that you don't even know what is going on around you, I can certainly relate to that, but at other times, I'm so distracted and overwhelmed by the sounds around me that I have to just give up on what I'm doing. Even right now as I type this, I'm getting incredibly agitated at someone who insists on talking to me as I write, the TV which is loudly playing an episode of Family Guy that I've seen at least 20 times, the cat playing loudly with a cardboard box, and other sounds I could name but won't because it would make this paragraph even longer.

My dad has been into antiques since he was a kid. He's just as into them now that he's in his 80s. That's his most consistent obsession. He also likes animals & gambling. His are pretty limited.

My interests have been far more varied over the years: Star Trek, ELO, horses, dogs, art, photography, & books. On any of the subjects, I get vary immersed into them. I'll have every form of information available on any topic: books, cassettes, CDs, 8 tracks, albums, videos, more books, websites, etc. For horses, I was never allowed to own one or even take lessons so I collected models. I probably had more than a hundred at the peak of my collection. I also had a collection of dogs too: I had glass dogs, porcelain dogs, dogs painted on plates, metal dogs, books on dogs, etc. Right now, I have a small collection of film & digital cameras along with a variety of books on different types of photography. I've alos collected books by certain authors: Piers Anthony & Elizabeth George (mystery novelist). I used to read Dorothy Sayers & Agatha Christie because I got interested in those authors during high school. I guess my obsessions are more specific than my dads. But we have the same kind of intensity when it comes to our special interests.

My interests are intense and last a few months to a year, usually. I think my interest in sonnets and haiku is different because that has lasted for 3 years now - and I've always, always had a general interest in poetry since I could read it. I've always been interested in the Mexica (Aztecs) since childhood, as well.

I get obsessed with bands and musicians, but after about a a few months of listening to them every day, my interest wanes and I find something else. The exceptions are that I was obsessed with the The Kinks for a couple of years and The Who for a couple of years. I don't know how I ever listened to them as much as I did!

It's Lou Reed at the moment (been obsessed for a couple of months now). My last obsession before that was Babylon 5.

I get crazy obsessed with the Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship (yes, I know that one doesn't have the best players) every time that comes around. I mean seriously obsessed. Ditto with the FIFA World Cup and Winter/Summer Olympics. I think about events/games that I can't watch if I'm at work or need to sleep.

Yes, I am intensely focused on my writing which brings all my other interests together; sci fi, astronomy, drawing, physics, etc.

I can get so focused on it that people think I am ignoring them and if one day I can't write I have already changed my routine around so much to focus on it that I literally have nothing left to do. I will sit there with a blank mind.

No I cant get absorbed really. My body hurts or the tv looks weird. I just have to deal with it for my special interests sake.
