I was at a restraunt and mention some books I'm reading and said the girl character gets shot in the head. Erica (older sister) said that isn't appropiate conversation. I then said the girl gets "hurt" then Erica asks how I said she's raped. WP why is shot in the head NOT appropiate YET you are raped IS??? I'm kind of confused. IMO both are serious issues!! !! Thanks.

it's not right, your sister is out of order. Unless you are in the company of minors, in which case neither subject is right for polite table conversation.

It all depends on the company your in. Sounds as if your sister may be squeamish - it may not be the violence that squicks her but the gore factor.

I wouldn't bat an eye at either conversations and neither would most of the people I've kept company with. You need to 'know your audience' in order to tailor your conversations. This is usually how most people find out about each others sensitivites and limits - they accidentially stumble on them and store that knowledge away for later.

I talked to Chris (another WPer I chat with) He said it was the context. I blurted out the girl gets shot in the head vs. the 2nd part saying she got hurt which lead to Erica asking How and me saying the girl gets raped. I still see both as serious issues. Also both were mentioned before the food had came so no squemishness. Go figure!

It sounds like a double standard.
