I'm asking because I have this issue. I'm learning disabled with processing deficits. And from looking at IQ scores, I would bet I have undiagnosed nonverbal learning disability. Poor social skills and VIQ and PIQ have about a 30 point discrepancy. I have heard that aspies are very similar to people with NVLD.

Anyhow, I was wondering if other people had my issue. If I am talking to someone directly, then I know they are talking to me. But if I am in a crowd of people, I cannot tell (like in a classroom or other situation where it may be me or the person beside me being acknowledged). I used to hate being called on in classrooms by the teacher pointing and looking. I couldn't tell if it was me being acknowledged or one of the many other people raising hands. To this day, if I am in an ambiguous situation where there are many people around me and it may or may not be me or them being called on then I cannot tell.

Do aspies tend to have this issue, or is this just my own neurological hiccup?

Hard to say. I don't look at people either, but I can tell people are looking at me by peripheral vision. Only thing is, people don't know if I'm talking to them.

I look at people quite intently so I tend to notice if they look back at me . (I'm an imitator and constantly look for indication that I've made a mistake)

If I'm a group of more than 3 people, then I can't tell. I find it too stressful and tend not to look at anyone.

I have very sensitive 'Gaze Awareness' ie the facility whreby you can tell when someone is looking at you, even when you aren't facing them.

It's practically involuntary with me - I'll turn to look in a particular direction and a person will be looking at me ie I've sensed their gaze and looked without even making a conscious decision to do so. Gaze awareness is a well known ability in humans - if you stare at anyone even from behind they often sense it and will turn to look around them. It's a sense developed to avoid predators

My 'switch' is turned up too high though and I immediately sense it with every glance in my direction.

I've always been able to tell if someone is looking at me even if I'm not looking at them. I just feel it. And when I look over, 99% of the time, I'm right.

Unless it is just me and someone else, and that someone else is looking directly at me (when I see out of the corner of my eye, as I rarely look directly at people myself), then I also have this issue. Sometimes if I am unsure, I will quickly examine a person's face to see if they are talking to me, and I am often wrong. One of my classes last month, the prof never bothered to learn any of our names. Instead, he would just look and point, and say "you". This was even more confusing because the "you" had their hand up. He was just picking random people to say a comment because no one would voluntarily. He would do that in every class, and I never knew if I was the "you" or not. Many times I thought I was, and then found out I actually wasn't.

My self esteem was so beaten down by this lonely, mean World that I started to grow extremely paranoid and obsessive. Someone could look at me, and for hours I would obsess about it. I got treatment, and now I only get upset if someone is glaring at me in a very obvious way. I started to think the worst motives for people looking at me, and thinking that they hated me or suspected me of something. Then, I realized that most times it is really something innocent. So, I don't obsess about someone staring at me so much anymore.

i totally lack the psychic faculty of gaze detection. i was always frustrated that even if i just glanced at somebody, they'd whip around angrily and face me with a "WTF!?!" look on their face, but i could never tell if anybody was looking at me. that's unfair, damn it. :x

No. But it makes me uncomfortable when people are looking in my general direction. That is, if I'm not talking to them. If I am, then that's different.
