Why precisely, are you not eating? Is it because you want to lose weight or avoid gaining weight or because you're just not hungry?

I think eating disorders usually have to do with an obsession with being thin....so that does not sound like an eating disorder, if you litterally cannot eat though I would talk to a doctor or something and see what is going on. Sometimes its hard for me to eat because my anxiety and depression has a tendency to interfere with my appetite. Also if I am about ready to eat and someone slams a door or there is some other sudden loud noise then I wont be able to for quite a while.

Sounds like extreme anxiety/depression. I was put on Zyprexa for anxiety-related weight loss and it didn't do much either. What does help is Clonazepam (I feel like I am a drug company representative for all the times I've mentioned this, but it is the generic name I believe) which is a prescription anti-anxiety pill you take as you need it.

If you really feel in danger you should call your doctor again and get an appointment ASAP to explain how serious you feel it is or go to the emergency room/hospital. They can at least put an IV in you so you get nutrients. But your panic over not being able to eat and therefore believing you'll die may be a symptom of the anxiety that is producing the inability to swallow food. I have been in the same situation with both food and sleep (believing I would die due to lack of these things). I was told I'd be okay.

So yes: I would ask about Clonazepam or some other fast-acting sedative that will lower your anxiety and allow your gag reflex to stop overacting and preventing you from eating. I would call a doctor about that as soon as you can.

Well I couldn't eat and lost twenty pounds over about a month when I was already at a normal weight, so then I was underweight. I was put on Zyprexa but only gained a couple pounds.

Clonazepam works within a couple hours at most I believe and you take it when you start to feel anxious. Usually it works so well I can't stay awake actually if I take the full dose. Anyway so you feel less anxious and then are able to eat a little bit.

Also I thought of foods that I would most be able to eat and asked my dad if he could bring them back from the grocery store. These were mostly peaches... which I read have a natural anti-anxiety effect... and sweet things at first like pastry. That's all I could really stand to eat at first. And the clonazepam, as I was prescribed it, you take one 1 milligram tablet three times a day if you feel you need it (say when you wake up, at lunch, and at dinnertime). Anyway it does make you very relaxed and you might not feel like eating much at first but eventually I was able to start eating other things like rice and tomatoes and then more involved cooked meals. I think it was a matter of a few days when I could eat anything again (as in, I felt able to eat any kind of food you could name).

And I still wasn't gaining weight for a couple weeks after that even though I was eating cause my anxiety was so high still but eventually it lowered and I gained the weight back.

Hopefully something similar will work for you. You could also ask your doctor about Ativan or Xanax, which I believe are even stronger sedatives that work right away if you're feeling very anxious.

Also has your doctor ordered you to take blood tests to check for thyroid problems or other problems that could be causing very high anxiety/depression? They ruled those out for me first.

Anyway I think your doctor can help if you bring up Clonazepam or Ativan or Xanax with them. I'm not sure where you live or what your health care system is like but I think they should be able to do something if you explain you physically gag on food and your body won't let yourself eat because you're so anxious.

One more thing!: I too had the gagging-on-food problem. It made me feel nauseous to try to eat and I just couldn't do it. But anyway after I started on the medicine and before I really had any appetite again I forced myself to eat even though I didn't want to at all. I did that for a few days/a week or so and soon I realized I actually wanted to eat again.

I'm having a similar problem although not quite as bad (yet). In my case it is CAUSED by the medication I am taking. I am on Prozac and I literally have to force feed myself, especially at lunchtime. It's really uncomfortable to force feed and makes me feel really sick. I would agree that it doesn't sound like a traditional eating disorder because it doesn't appear to be that you want to lose weight or think you are overweight. I would also agree that it sounds like extreme anxiety. I think you need to keep bugging your doctors until they help you, but make sure they are aware that it is NOT a weight loss issue because they might put you on a psych ward. Are you on any other medications which might have led to your swallowing problem or do you think it could be anxiety?

When you enter an anxious state, your body automatically shuts down all the parts it deems unnecessary and prepares you to fight or fly (run away). Unfortunately the stomach and all of the relating areas are the first to go. So as awful as this is for you, it is a natural thing which can be treated. Try to stay calm though because panicking will make you feel worse.

I understand being unable to eat after choking accidents. That happened to me when I was 3 years old. My parents took me to the pediatrician, and his solution was to put me on soft foods only, such as oatmeal/hot cereal, along with protein shakes and vitamin supplements. This continued for about a year, and then one day at my cousin's birthday party, I ate some birthday cake. After that, I gradually began eating normally again.

Maybe you should try to do what I did and see if it helps.

No, eating disorders doesn't always mean someone wants to be thin. It can also mean someone eats too much or someone is obsessed about eating healthy so they restrict foods and it makes their body be malnutrition. Sometimes people have an eating disorder because they have very bad sensory issues so lot of food is uncomfortable for them to feel in their mouths and to chew it and because of the taste. So they may lack food intake and they end up with having anorexia. Sometimes people use food for control and it's not about weight at all. It's about wanting control so they use food. Sometimes people don't eat because of their anxiety or depression as well and they may get diagnosed with an eating disorder as well.

So you can have an eating disorder without an obsession about your body. I even wonder if it's still considered an eating disorder if someone has celiac or lot of food allergies or acid reflux so they can't eat lot of food and are very restricted because their condition is so severe.

Eating disorders is like an autism spectrum. There are different kinds of eating disorders and all of them are different. Not all of them mean starving yourself to be thin or throwing up your food to stay thin. Just like autism doesn't always mean non verbal, screaming all the time and banging your head all the time, wearing diapers, and being locked in your own world.
