I have a sense of humour that is, to many people, highly offensive. No topic is off-limits and if it's not "too soon" it's no longer funny. I understand that people become offended because they have automatic emotional responses to certain images and concepts (esp. death and violence related), but I don't understand why either they don't recognise that this is irrational and see the wit and humour, or why I don't seem to have the same response. To my mind, the real tragedies are in the reality of violent, dangerous and unfortunate situations, realities that do not change depending on whether someone points out any (for example) irony in these situations, which also does not preclude someone from helping to better those situations.

Is this something any of you also deal with? Is it a common NT trait? I do have some NT friends (albeit probably closer to the autistic end of the spectrum than your typical NT (hehe, TNT..)) with similar sense of humour, but I always seem to be the one to take it that bit too far or stay on it too long...

Or am I just a jerk?

If you can take someone potentially laughing at and mocking (not just making fun of in a comedic sense) situations that were extremely traumatic to you, then good for you. A lot of people couldn't do that. I think the point comes where you start telling offensive jokes of your own back. If they kick your teeth in, then they obviously weren't joking because they couldn't take it in the spirit presented.

A friend likes shocking people with 'eating babies' type jokes.

He's very, very dark and a bit disturbed

Some of the themes you ruminate on may not serve you well. being free to go to all places in your head, doesnt mean you should.

It is possible to go to far with these types of themes, and can desensitise propriety and more outward all boundarys of acceptable behaviour or speech

Be careful. Some peps get locked up for what they say, even on line words said in jest

Thankfully, the last few times I have been through airports have been work-related and colleagues have been able to convince me that airport security is unlikely to make a distinction between airport security jokes and airport security meta-jokes, vis: "HALT! I am armed with...a joke about hijacking! God help me, I'll tell it!"

I thought humor was invented to make it easier to deal with difficult issues. But I guesss it is not as simple.

I have an offensive sense of humor. Check my Custom Rank <<< I notice that people think it's funny when NTs make those kinds of jokes but they think it's more offensive when I do for some rezone. I try not to talk about my sense of humor too much unless I'm talking to someone who likes that kind of humor as well

Yes, I've gotten in trouble before because it didn't occur to me at the time that my baby rape joke was inappropriate for dinner conversation.

That said, some folks are cut out to be comedians, and some folks are not.

I personally go with a different definition for comedian: "one who says serious things in a funny way."

I used to joke about that stuff online a lot(check Members section for post about me being a psycho online) I have improved quite a lot. My sense of humor is more with Family Guy, iCarly & comedy music now. BTW there is a comedy song called "Baby Raper"; it's an Opie & Anthony thing.

I wanted to be a comedian when I was little but trying to be one caused me to have more problems. I have too much anxiety now unless I'm with people who joke around a lot

To me, you're entitled to have any kind of sense of humor that feels natural to you, that you enjoy the most. But you're not entitled to have everyone react to it as you might hope. When you get into offensive humor you can easily push buttons with other people that they find traumatic and troubling, and sometimes the humor itself does nothing but reinforce the dominant cultural paradigm at the expense of marginalized people (I wonder if this could be called a form of micro-aggression).

I'm not particularly interested in humor that validates and reifies oppressive attitudes and behavior - what is the humor of a joke that repeats something that is real and traumatic for many people? That's not a moral judgment, that's simply my perspective.

I've always had a very dark sense of humor, and it can be considered offensive to some.

It did get me in trouble once in junior high. We had this stupid drill that they made us do right after the Columbine shootings. I thought everyone was overreacting, so I made a joke about a school shooting and got suspended for it.

Getting suspended for a joke is definitely overreacting. Columbine really made people all weird.
