Hi to everyone,
I would like to understand
and to know with everyone who does rocking
when you noticed you start to do it.
I have Aspergers, got diagnosys 3 months ago.
Never done before, two months ago I started to rock back and forth, slow and gentle
I think it staerted to appear 2 months ago, after a very stressful traumatic event I had.
Now rocking has became frequent for me , I feel good, it helps me to gently hold myself, it is comfortable and I noticed I do also when I am excited and happy.
I find it being very sweet and gentle. It is such amazing sensation, I feel like a child.

I would like to know...There is someone who started to rock as an adult and just recently?
Do you think is connected it with a special event you recently had?
Thank you to everyone

Yup! Started rocking recently mainly when upset. Well I LOVE LOVE LOVED rocking chairs and swings as a kid but never was a rocker without these items.

I think a diagnosis frees us from the idea we have to keep our pain bottled up and keep looking normal and our natural self-soothing remedies like rocking come out then.

Then again rocking incoroprated into dancing is a "socially acceptable" form of rocking and I've always done that. But I can't exactly start dancing in some places and I was just crying and rocking and didn't care and it was so SOOTHING.

I rocked a bit as a young kid, don't know what age though. Then I stopped for many years (stimmed with my hair instead!) then when I was 12 it started again. I find it really soothing.

I have a very specific way that I have to rock for it to feel right. I sit on the edge of a couch or low chair. My left leg is crossed at the ankle over my right knee, and my right foot is tip-toe on the floor. I lean forward and hug my crossed left leg. I slowly bounce my right foot up and down which makes me rock back and forth. Unfortunately I don't know how long I've been doing it. I only started noticing my stims once I started learning about AS.
I love rocking chairs and I love swinging back and forth on swings too.

Yup. I rocked as a very small child but I didn't start it up again until I had got a diagnosis. I heard of it and tried it and was surprised at how natural it felt and how much more I was able to deal with and how much better I was able to think when I was in motion.

Often times, an autism diagnosis lets you feel more free to do what comes naturally rather than--as you have probably been urged to your whole life--act "normal" to fit in, even if that isn't the best option for you. It is quite common for people who have just been diagnosed to drop some of the facade and start acting in more stereotypically autistic ways--don't let that frighten you; it's quite natural. In a while you'll find your equilibrium and know what balance between oddity and blending-in lets you be most productive.

I rocked a lot as a child, it was comforting but sometimes I did it when I felt out of controll. When there were loud noices in the room I would hide under a table and rock myself, changes in my time table caused the same thing. As I grew older I found that this was unacceptable so I had to stop. It sometimes still happens though.

Ehe! thanks to everyone for sharing
I really love to rock. back and forth when I sit down, from side to side when I stand up
it is slowly and gentle
I notice is like a form of meditation for me, connecting with my body-mind-heart
and the rhythm of my breath.
It clears my mind.
i don't do rock all the time. It starts unconsciousously with every kind of emotion (excited, sad, happy, nervous)
I just try to be aware of space and time
