I know its pronounced AS-BERG-GERS SYN-DROME. Is this correct? Most other NTs prounonce it AS-PER-JERS SIN-DRUM. That's wrong isn't it? Something to do with the letters in the german language (as the founder was german) isn't it? I'm just curious.

He was astrian, or german or something like that, so it is pronounced in german, the original name. "Asperger's" is more correct than "ASPERJERS" but you would have an american way to pronounce it and the more correct german way, where the "E"'s are more open than in american/english.

I guess you could pronounce it any way you want as long as people understand what you mean. I like it when things are pronounced in the correct way, like Beijing instead of Peking, and Firenze instead of Florenz.

I just listened to an on-line lecture by Tony Attwood. He talks about meeting Hans Asperger's Daughter (Maria) who is also a child psychologist. He asked her how the family name is pronounced. It is pronounced, using the International Phonetic Alphabet for English, thus...

Asperger - Αs-bɪɹ-gз (As-beair-ger's Syndrome)

α = father

s = see

b = but, web

ɪɹ = near, Here

g = go, get, beg

з = bird

That's the best I can do.

Even though it is correct, I think pronouncing it As-ber-gers sounds a bit rude, so I call it As-per-jers.

I pronounce it as rhyming with hamburger.

So do I. :D

When signing, I spell it out (A-S-P-E-R-G-E-R-S) or as A-S and if clarification is needed, the sign for autism (covering the face with both hands cupped and palms facing the signer).

So, I guess I should stop saying :

AUS pair ZHay

Nah, nobody knows what that is, just the way I like it.

I do use this, but I don't do it quite right. If I get caught doing some embarrassing stimming, it changes the subject.

I usually pronounce it AS-PER-GER'S, rather than AS-PER-GER'S, when mentioning to NTs. It makes harded for them to make fun of it by calling it "ass-burger".

I always thought ass-burger syndrome was kinda funny myself. :lol: To make it even more confusing my doctor pronounces it Ass-PURG-ers.

It's a German name, so it should be pronounced:

ahsPÈRger (the 'g' as in 'good')

Corcovado and starling are right. In Danish, it's pronounced exactly like in German. In Swedish, it's pronounced either exactly like in German [as'bergзrs] or [as'berjзrs].
