Has anyone tried speed reading? I downloaded some software to try it and found I could up my reading speed from around 300 wpm to 800 wpm with similar comprehension.

Also does anyone else find it difficult to put down a book once started, or to pick it back up if they do put it down? I tend to read all my books in one sitting. If I stop part way I find it difficult to ever pick it up again.

No. I'm dealing with an undiagnosed learning disorder that makes me need to read every sentence slowly and very often several times for it to sink in.

I don't have difficulty putting a book down once I've started, but I do have difficulty picking it back up again. There's a reason I prefer short novellas over novels. I have trouble finishing things in general, and that goes for books as well.

I am a huge reader but prefer fantasy books more than any other, and I have tried to speed-read but have never been able to get into it, though sometimes my mind will see a particular word on a page for some reason and I cannot go past the page without finding it, even if it takes an eon lol

Whenever I speed read my mind starts to wander off and it's like I never read anything. I have to read slowly and translate the meaning of each sentence into concepts that I can understand, one at a time.

Yes I'm the same. I have since reverted to normal reading for the same reason -- I get much more out of it this way and can better memorize things and relate them to past knowledge.

I have to read a book in one sitting or I tend to never pick it up again, or feel the need to reread what I had already read before.
It is madness really, lol.

I'm a fast reader but my comprehension isn't all that great.

I've not done a speed reading program. I just speed read...

When I got my assessment, the neuropsycholist didn't believe when I asked what if I finished the reading section. I then read at my normal rate, got amazing scores on the reading comprehension, and had read probably at about 2000 wpm.

I don't have to finish books is one sitting, but it bothers me a lot if I don't stop at the end of a chapter if the book has chapters. If it doesn't, then I don't care where I stop.

I have to read a bit slowly so I can comprehend everything. Sometimes I'll go back to a previous line and reread it several times before I finally understand it, and then do the same thing again with the next line. It mostly happens when I'm unable to put 100% of my concentration into what I'm reading.

You've described me exactly, but it also happens even when I'm focusing on the book and nothing else.

I learned speed reading and find it useful getting through material which has little new information; finding anything unknown quickly.

I don't employ it when I'm reading material dense with new information. Or when I'm reading a novel I'm enjoying; then I want to savour.

This. So I rarely try to speed read. When I'm searching for a specific theme or topic in a book or text, I only read fragments of the sentences and quickly move on. This is not speed reading, though.

When I read a favourite book of mine for the Nth time, reading is much faster. :D

As for foreign language, I read 2 to 10 times slower. I have to go back and interpret/translate the meaning of the text and/or words occasionally. Difficult language causes me to have extreme hard time (say, Dickens'), while with easy language I have no problem to read relatively fast. With difficult text I'm like a bulldog to have its meaning extracted, having unleashed the full potential of my intuitive thinking.

i tried doing an afternoon course for speed reading; but i found my initial speed higher then using the tought techniques; and also higher then most of the other attendees after the course; so i have no need for it.
