Hi,
There's something I've had for a long time, but haven't been able to find any information on. No one else knows about it.

Often, I get a 1-2 second spasm around my neck and down my arms, just after going to the bathroom (that's a euphamism, incase any of you aspies missed it).

Does anyone know much about things like this? Is it AS related?

Thanks

Muscle spasm and jerks like that are known as "myoclonus". They're quite common when drifting off to sleep - I have them then, and the jerks can be quite big, full-body jerks that make me lift out of the bed a few centimeters. Haven't heard about myoclonus associated with bathroom visits. I could imagine it has something to do with muscle relaxation, though - but I'm not a doctor.

I wouldn't think they are specifically AS-related. Myoclonus is associated with a large number of possible disorders, but more importantly occurs in perfectly healthy people, too.

Thanks for that.

I just googled "MICTURITION REFLEX" and found a page on "Basic Urodynamics"! I bet a lot of researchers dont want to explain to people exactly what they do when they say their urodynamicists.

Might want to experiment with taking a magnesium supplement to see if that helps with the muscle spasms. Many people are deficient in magnesium. Slo-Mag brand is the gentlest on the stomach by the way.

Yeah I usually have a muscle twitch or spasm somewhere on my body going almost constantly it just moves around.

Im pretty sure I need more potassium and probably less calcium (though I crave milk constantly for some reason its about all I drink) not sure about my magnesium levels.

Potassium seems to fix the twitching but it also makes me edgy and nervous.. its weird.

One of these days I should probably have a nutricionist or whatever theyre called check me out just been too lazy and unconcerned :P

yeah you're probably right. coffee is a diruetic thus you stand to lose electrolytes. Take a packet of Emergen- C and call me in the morning. :) Speaking of which are we on for the Fair tomorrow or not?

Recently (the last 3-4 weeks or so) my left eyelid has been twitching a lot...it's getting slightly annoying now so maybe a magnesium supplement would help. Glad I'm not the only one...

I had that a couple yrs back. You need potassium and magnesium for that. Get one pill that has both so it will be a balanced amount. I know one brand Solaray makes the combo. That's what I took and the twitching stopped in a couple days. But continue taking it because its obvious your electrolytes are out of balance. Let me guess you probably been sweating alot this summer, perhaps very active? Nearly every summer happens to me where the electrolytes go askew from too much sweating. Things like Gatorade are of little help because really its just sugar water with a teeny amount of electrolytes.

I get painful spasms in my neck, but never from what you mention. My neck is just screwed up from squashed discs and arthritis.
It must be very unpleasant to get spasms from that particular function you mention.

I get muscle spasms in my leg that make me almost scream when I try to sleep sometimes. I don't suppose it's the same thing. I think it is all my spinal problems.

I always very careful not to have a mug of hot coffee on my lap just in case it happens to me - again. I get BIG ones.

There are a number of spasms I get some may be from an unrelated condition. I get tics around my lips that continue going on 24-7. I also get intermittent muscle spasms as muscles contract in my shoulders and upper arms calves of my legs. Also tics in my hands and in fingers as I cannot hold my fingers perfectly still.
Also if I get over enthusiastic about playing a video game or assemble things together quickly. Or have a discussion to someone about an issue I am very passionate about, my gestures that get right out of control if I do not take time out to relax.

Paul
