Don't worry this isn't a case where my uncles cousins daughters nephew has a friend with autism and I'm giving advice. Quite the contrary.

There's this family I know and one of the kids is nonverbal autistic. They have told me that. I know a lot about high functioning autism but not much about the lower ends of the spectrum.

Anyways, not my point. I'm not sure how much THEY know about autism themselves. (I really don't know how they talk to him because they are bilingual and while talking to him they don't speak English)

I've wondered before if they might try sign language but they told me they didn't know it and brushed it off. I'm sure they want to communicate with their son because who wouldn't want a way to communicate with their son.

I'm thinking of referring them here so that they have community support. It definitely would not hurt. I guess I don't actually have a question here. Just telling my experiences.

i've seen some nonverbal or nonspeaking kids at my former HS walk around with what seems to be speech generating devices, maybe they use those? it's really an area where parents have to get creative.

i guess after being a parent for years, you get to know the meaning of what seems to be simplistic nonword vocalizations to outsiders.

you're welcome to tell your experiences. :)
