It could be that some, genetically or as result of upbringing, adapt to the sensory issues (or learn to) whereas the more severe cases are either taking in a hell of a lot more info, or they've never been introduced as to how. But, that gets more into the individual's "Little World," where I know most of us retract to when we're overwhelmed. When we're in that state, someone outside has to be willing to find out what that little world is and bring them out of it (preferably slowly so as not to overdo it).
