In high school/junior high I saw a growing new element. The element of “pep“, I’ve decided to call it.

Present in basically every group activity but exemplified in assemblies, football games, and lunch room groups.

Never understood it then and still don’t.

People would get excited when nothing is really happening. Simply an event where basically nothing will really happen out of the ordinary will some how become extraordinary just because you have more people involved in the situation.

Anyone else find it difficult to have "pep"?

Of course most aspies would I think.....maybe even a lot of the general public because it just seems so stupid to me. And you'd have to either be faking it or you are mindlessly absorbed into a crowds "aura" by some magic force code word "empathy"......

We have3 a 'Christmas in the park' variety performance where 150,000 turn up to see soap stars sing crap songs badly

I always joke about 'Dog s**t in the park'. Basically, if you had a dog doing poop on stage, a few thousand would turn up to watch it.

Yeah, pep is definitely pretty stupid. The idea is to inflate the excitement level for the purpose of enjoyment or entertainment. This is prevalent in sports. I think it also works on the level of emotional contagion. If one is surrounded by energetic excitement than some of that emotion may transfer to others.
I think that is the purpose of it.

I agree, pep always baffled me. Now nap is something I can relate to.

I do. In fact, there is a famed pop-rock stage event going on just now nearby here they call "Sziget" (Island, LINK) . I just don't feel like joining such madness. Whenever I went to a concert I was always content (or discontent) with listening to the music only, I couldn't communicate with others anyway because of the noise. I've never participated in team sports apart from a short period at the Uni, and that was not a high point of my life. So yes, I have to fake "pep" if I want to appear "normal". :)

I never cared for pep rallies in high school. In all my four years of high school, I think I'd only gone to a couple of pep rallies. The only thing I liked about pep rallies was that they allowed us to go home early.

I generally have a difficult time exhibiting pep in any kind of exciting event, even if I truly am excited.

I had to look that term up.....we don't have such untoward things in England of course. :nerdy:

No I don't have that group pep thing at all. I don't rejoice in a showy way as an individual either. I've got a fair bit of physical energy but I use it to get practical things done, and I don't make a noise about that.

I tried, especially when I was little, but I could never see what the fuss was about. Group stuff never interested me all that much. I can see where it might be useful for fostering some kind of group mentality or feeling like you are part of something bigger than yourself, but it was always very confusing to me. And when I wasn't confused, it simply seemed silly and unnecessary.

I much preferred solitary activities. :D

Interesting question.

Can't answer.

"Pep" is something "other" people have.

I don't. And I really hate it when others treat me like I'm being rude or a stick in the mud when I refuse to fake having it.

The only "Pep" I have is printed at the beginning of the label on my bottle of Pepto-bismol. (I don't drink Pepsi)

Hey! I do drink Moxie though, so...

Not quite the same though, is it?
