i am researching what individuals with autism think about living at home , or alternatively living away in a residential school or similiar, would it be better to live away if the environment was right or is home with family always better

It depends on the circumstances. If I'm interested in something I would rather be home, but if I'm bored I would rather be away.

If you feel bullied by your family or your father is an alcoholic away is better.

Away, of course. I dreamed about living by myself, away from my family, ever since I was olden enough to imagine what it would be like. I even wanted to move to a different place entirely, since I was growing up in a small city, and there was more gossip than on Sex and the City. No matter what I did while I was outside my home, my parents always found out because random strangers on the street (at least I though they were) always told them: "We were walking through such and such a neighborhood, and we saw your son doing so and so". It was like a police state from George Orwell's 1984. I hated every minute of it.

After I read the story of Noah's Ark, I started fantasizng about being the only survivor in a worldwide apocalypse. But that's a topic for a different thread.

Its really a matter of personal preference.

To overgeneralize Id say staying home is usually more comfortable and allows more room for obsession while living away grants more freedom and peace and quiet but at the cost of more stress.

I like my parents' home but I don't like living together with my parents. But it would be much worse living away if it had to be together with strangers. The thing is, I grew up in the country, so I don't want to live in anything else than an own house or one that I hired but lived alone in anyway.

It also depends on how much space you have at home. For instance, my house is pretty small, more like an apartment with a yard, so my room -and every room- is in the middle of things and I don't feel like I have much privacy. If I had a room in the corner of a big house I'd like it much more.
Also all the noise of the living room and kitchen gets in through the walls. I'm seriously considering soundproofing.
