I stumbled across this memoir, When All the World Was Young, by Barbara Holland (Amazon link). If you enjoy this sort of thing, you might check out a few sample pages on Amazon. I love the way Holland gets to the heart of life, struggling to make sense of a world in which she's an alien creature. It's terrifying and tragic, but Holland's tone is darkly humorous rather than whipped. Her book may help some of the rest of us get through.
