I don't want to go to law school
I'm in a real tough situation. My parents want me to go to law school but I don't for reasons I won't go into right now. They don't know that I don't want to go because I've been trying to avoid confrontation. I also want to live alone even if that means being homeless as long as I have some kind of shelter (e.g., a shed, a van, a tent, etc.). I have no idea what to do with my life.
1. I’m leaving Monday for an orientation in Texas (I’m in Colorado Springs). Class starts the 25th.
2. I have probably a little over $400.
3. I have no car.
4. I don't know how to do most things on my own but would like to learn by being independent.
5. I have no marketable skills. I have always sucked at my jobs for reasons relating to time management, commonsense, social awkwardness, and what appears to be errors in executive functioning.
6. I can’t find a job.
7. I have a bachelors in political science with a philosophy minor and graduated with a 3.5 GPA.
PLEASE HELP!! !

Unless you are going to a top law school or on a scholarship its probably a very bad idea to go to law school.
You could go very far into debt and be unable to get a job that is well paying enough to justify the time and expense of law school.
Anyone considering furthering their education with massive student loans needs to watch this video:
Its mostly about undergraduate education, but also contains good points about professional schools.

What does that have to do with anything? You didn't read my post. I signed up for this site just because I need serious help with this.

Can't see the connection between your post and my reply?
One more point: Unless you are fully committed, graduate education will eat you alive.
Besides........You are looking in the wrong place if you only came here for that question.

I don't have anything bad to say about law school.
There is a lot you can do with a legal education, and it's fairly easy to find something rewarding in the field. I don't know exactly how things are in your area, but my experience is that finding a good job with a law degree is a fairly simple matter.
Law is not for everyone, but I'd suggest you give it a chance and explore what options the law would open up for you before you reject it completely.

Tell your parents you won't go to law school, you probably won't be any good at it if you're not motivated anyway. But don't go homeless. Find a job and a house first. If you can't find a job, still don't go homeless. You're practically broke and you don't know how to do most things on your own, you'll be miserable.
Just my two cents.
Agreed. I have a master's in the same subject as the OP and I've thought about law school, but I have a mediocre LSAT score (154) and I just don't think more education is the right thing for me. After all, my previous two degrees haven't done jack for me.
Shizzedoff, you're in a tough spot. Obviously, if you don't want to go to law school, you shouldn't be there. But a poli-sci degree, by itself, doesn't get you far unless you're ready to do some serious networking and job hunting, AND be willing to work outside your comfort zone. In any event, it doesn't sound like you're ready to live on your own yet. You need money, a place to stay, a car, a phone, and internet access. But before ANY of that, you need to tell your parents you don't want to go to law school, and the sooner the better. Yes, they'll be mad. Yes, they'll try and talk you out of it. Yes, they'll call you irresponsible and other things too for not doing the 'obvious' next step. They'll tell you your political science degree is worthless without a post secondary degree to go with it. Not true, but it does take work.
But before you do even that, you have to decide what you DO want to do. "I just want a job" isn't enough. Search your soul and find where your passion is, what you really want to devote your energy to. Would you be willing to continue school in another discipline? Do you have friends in a big city who could put you up while you job hunt? Do you know what things you need to know to live alone, even if you don't know how to do those things yet? Now is the time to answer these questions, as many as you can. PM me if you want more specific advice, but in general, this is what you have to do now.

So you majored in poli sci and minored in philosophy, and you don't wanna go to law school? Didn't really think that one through, did you? Still, if you don't want to go to law school, you'll almost definitely end up dropping out and wasting your time and money. From what I've heard, law school is pretty brutal and not the kind of thing you should go into unless you're highly motivated.
PLEASE HELP!! !
hmmm
1) Why do you your parents want you to go to law school (as distinct from any other course)?
2) What other course would you WANT to do?
3) or what course do you think you would enjoy doing?
If you have a decent answer (for you) to either question 2 or 3, then do that course.
my parents pushed me into doing a course that I didnt want to do (without the benefit of a 1st degree) and it really messed things up for me.
Make sure that whatever you do, is what YOU want to do.

I have a master's in poli-sci, and it's not helping me in the job market despite good grades, scholarships, and awards. So no, even a post-secondary degree doesn't help. And I've tried networking.
