I have Skull Candy headphones which work pretty well to cancel out any outside noise, I am ALWAYS listening to my music when I am out of the house--it has become a necessity. I usually listen to my music as well if my parents are watching the television (I always sit in the living-room since my room is too small and messy).

So I was wondering, is it possible I've stopped myself from "growing" as a person since I've been obsessively listening to my music since my late teens? I've noticed that if I'm out in public without my music, I begin to feel very anxious--I'm wondering if my music has been helping to soothe my emotions? I HAVE to listen to my music when I'm stressed, or else I'll absolutely lose it--it is the only way that I know how to calm myself down, or I start pacing in circles or talking to myself (another way to calm myself down when I'm stressed).

I should mention, that I stim a lot with my music--I listen to the same songs over and over again. I listened to a Mum song 87 in one day

Same here. I love music and moving- dancing, stimming, walking, jogging, exercising. Music makes it easier. If you like music, nothing wrong with listening to it in public. I shop with my ipod and earbuds.

Yes, I know an autistic who stims a lot without music i.e, he starts getting all nervous and squeaky so to control he has to jump up and down or something like that. I don't like listening to music in public because sounds are important to me. Sound around me guide me more than my sight or smell.

I tend to drum on some kind of surface to my music if I'm not posting on WP or doing chores.

I have a tendency to listen to the same song over and over at times. I understand that it can really annoy other people, so I tend to either do this when I'm alone or when there are headphones. Never really thought of it as a "stim" though.

I've thought of music as a stim before. Since I like to hear ambient noises so that it allows me to feel more secure, I prefer to listen to music at home. Although I don't always listen to the same tracks or titles over and over again, I have the tendency to listen to the same music from time to time, and when I really "in" some music, I can listen to it 5 to 10 times in series.

Listening to the same music over and over again has the side effect on me it plays in my mind intermittently after, even when I'm asleep.

Ever since I learnt to belly dance, my stimming to music has become more focused and more like movements recognisable to the general population. However, it's not always appropriate to be hip gyrations and chest lifts, so it's not made it totally socially acceptable everywhere.
