Firstly, I'm sure there are already threads like this one so I'm sorry to make another, but I've searched on here and couldn't find what I was looking for. I have what I'm hoping will continue to be an amazing significant other, so it's important to me and probably to the long term stability of our relationship that we both understand each other, and I want a few other people in my life to understand as well. As I see it, the first and biggest part of that is trying to explain my own traits.

I tried to write a letter or short paper, but it's just getting so verbose and I can't waste that much time on something that probably isn't phrased as well as a published book might be.

What guides or books have you found that were particularly good? Google turns up a lot of webpages, but they aren't the greatest. I don't want just a long list of possible symptoms, nor do I want some medical book that treats it as a disease/disorder with symptoms like it's something negative. I also don't want a parenting book because I'm so sick of being treated like I'm stupid, crazy or a child.

Thanks!

Have you seen greenturtle74's cartoon guide to AS?

Two books I've found useful:
* Kathy J. Marshack: Going Over the Edge (recommended to me by another poster here)
* Sarah Hendrickx & Keith Newton: Asperger Syndrome - A Love Story
Good luck - I hope it all works out for you.

I've found this blog pretty funny and comprehensive (came across it here on WP):

Thanks for that link, OJani. So much that is written about ASD is doom and gloom it is nice to see someone with a sense of humour! I particularly liked the entry on dressing appropriately.

I think something like greenturtle74's cartoon, but covering a lot more things and geared more toward adults. That other website is good too, but just not what I'm looking for.

I'm still digging through ebooks, but so many focus on words like symptoms, associated problems, diagnosis, treatment and intervention, mental health disorder, disorder, disorder, and worst of all "right-hemisphere brain dysfunction". Jeeze... Is this how average NTs really see us?

Edit: Also, Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndrome by Luke Jackson (2002) is pretty good, but it's geared more toward AS than NTs.

I think this one is good -- I wanted to dig it up and do a little rereading, since you were so specific about what you don't want, and you may not want this -- but you may want to get a copy and read it, then see whether you want to pass it on to whoever, or selected quotes from it, maybe. You can get it from Amazon.com. It isn't really long, just 84 pages including index, resources, and front matter. It's
"The Other Half of Asperger Syndrome" by Maxine C. Aston.

She says "This book has been written as a guide to Asperger syndrome for anyone who has a partner with this disorder. The information used to compile this book has been drawn from three areas -- my research into this specialised area, my work as a couples counsellor and my own personal experience, having lived with a partner who was given a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome"

That's why I said "Read it yourself first", because the "disease/disorder" part of it might get a little thick, but OTOH, she's been there, done that, and got the t-shirt, and she _does_ understand how to communicate with Aspies.
