HFA at work,
I work in the computer network industry. I am not desk bound but I manage the physical side of a network, from large cable runs to fibre optic connections, from installing servers and switches to working on circuit baords or custom gear.
In work I am seeing my aspie's present itself more and more. This is not because it is getting worse, but that I am becoming more aware of when I am off planet.
I am seen as a dark and efficient character by others, due to my (what I call SKREWFACE) unemotional face I think that it is hard for others to gague my mood. They think i look angry when i am laughing inside, when people engague in eye contact i will hold it for very long periods and i guess disturb them. I dont engague people but i will talk with them if they instigate it (guess what!), then you cant shut me up
When people do get to know me then they find that i am one of the smartest and most funniest people that they will know (untill i insult them by opening my big blab while off planet).
The thing is, that by spotting these traits within myself I can try to stop myself from doing them. Kind of an overide that I try to flash up like an alert, to stop what i am locked on and change the subject.
I have started to find that what is in the mind is best left there when at work unless you have good control, otherwise just keep yourself in check and work on your terms, not others.
Marcus.
Hi
I think I subconsciously adopted a different 'persona' at work
(slightly more outgoing and in control than I really was) in
order to try and fit in better. The problem is you can become
so good at pretending that it starts to be a strain trying to
keep it going and you also delude yourself into thinking you
really are a changed person.
Work can be difficult enough to concentrate on without having
to worry too much about our image,so I think it's best we
put the job itself first and just try to get along with colleagues
as best we can. I'm in the distribution business which can be
hectic enough at times.
Other things for people with AS to watch out for are working too
hard (eg through most lunch breaks),being a perfectionist at the expense of deadlines and taking complaints from the public personally . I plead guilty to these common traits !
regards

Yep I'm guilty of all that. Well except for the not taking lunch breaks part. I am usually a recluse on my days off to recover from having to be socialable and joke with my co-workers. I like working on the weekends so I have two days I work that I can be left alone for the most part.
