I hate the sand too. I have fewer problems when the sand is really big crystals or the beach is slightly rocky. I live on the coast too, and i only go to the "natural" beaches.

I will often go to the beach at night or when it is cloudy and overcast and I will only walk along the water where the sand is harder and won't stick to everything or get between my toes and over my foot. The trick is not getting your feet wet from the ocean. Then the sand isn't so bad. I cringe at putting my shoes back on. I don't wear my sandals for days after going to the beach until they completely dry out and then I wash them.

But, the whole lots of people and the noise and yuckiness of it all.... not to mention I love trickling water but the sound of the waves practically scare me. :?

I live right next to the beach. I've spent alot time in my life on a beach somewhere. Nonetheless....the beach is always little more than a means to an end for me. I have been a certified scuba diver, avid snorkeler, shell collector, etc....for most of life. I don'tl like just SITTING or hanging around on the beach though. Sitting on the beach is just boring in my IMO and I don't like direct sunlight. I have a dark complexion......but i've never deliberately tried to get a tan in my life. I'm part Serbian, Italian and Ashkenazi Jewish (of semitic origin....i'm not the least bit religious) for one thing. For another....I live in the subtropics/tropics and it's kinda hard not to get a tan around here.

I don't like just lying on the beach, because I'm not really a fan of heat, and having to slap on suntan lotion is irritating. I quite like certain activities that one can do on the beach, though. Surfing, windsurfing, sailing, wakeboarding, scuba diving/snorkelling, that kind of thing.

The ladies are usually nice to look at as well.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I quite like walking along beaches at night time (although obviously I haven't had much chance to do so where I live). I like looking at the stars.

I loved playing in the sand as a kid. Perhaps I was a meerkat in a past life. I want to go to the beach this coming summer as an excuse to play in the sand. I sometimes rub my hands along the sand in my lizard's cage because I like how it feels. I tried to stick my feet in once but got in trouble.

You could try going when the tide is on its way out so that most of the sand is still wet, that is of course if wet sand is more tolerable than dry.

You could also try out those latex swimming socks.

No, no. beaches that lots of people hang out at are groomed, or at the very least so many people have been on them that the sand is loose. The natural beaches tend to have more debris on them (seaweed, etc) but no one has walked on them so the sand is hardened and the individual grains clumped together into bigger grains. When the grains are bigger and the sand is firmer, I don't get that queasy, weirded out feeling walking on it. Plus, not as many people go to them, so it is quieter and not as overwhelming. There is an expectation that you shouldn't sit withing hearing distance and preferably even close visual distance.

I live close to the sea, but I go to beach rarely. I don't like people, sun and sunscreencream. I'm tall, so I wear 2-parts costume. I prefer a suit, because I hate to show my belly (I plan to buy a tankini). I don't like to lie and get a tan, I prefer to swim. I'd like to play a ball, but I don't have friends.
I feel better when it's more cloudy, there are less people on the beach and I feel more comfortable.
I like to walk on the beach in winter or spring, there are almost no people. I take my dog and we walk many kms.

I'm not the biggest fan of sand at the beach, especially since some usually gets lodged into my swimsuit. The noise at some beaches can be bothersome as well. I don't go there much unless I know the place won't be super busy.

On top of it, I'm very sensitive to strong, direct sun. And I hate the crowd on the beach.

I hadn't been to the beach in 15 years when I went to Ponte Verde last year. It was mixed.. I absolutely HATED the feel of sand whether dry or wet. But I loved the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves. I went when it was almost dusk and still hated the smaller sized crowds. I sat far away from the bulk of them and just watched the waves for a couple hours.

I guess next time I'll bring along some socks & tennies.

If I didn't know better, I'd say sand defies the laws of physics by the way it gets everywhere. Screw particles.

I love going to the beach. Sitting on a picnic towel doesn't bother me.
