therapist: you can't have asperger's, people with asperger's don't care if people don't like them

I have and I do but most of the time I don't think they do, I just usually ask it's more reliable than if I leave it to my brain to work it out.

I think that therapist was thinking of the wrong disorder...there are some disorders where people do not particularly like or desire social interaction but with AS usually people want to interact and would like people to like them but sometimes have difficulty with those things.

Did you ask your therapist for other things people with asperger's are supposed to do or not do? I would love to hear them all.

They're confusing AS with the syndrome that is named after me. Because I tend to not care what people think about me.

Best to not go to a therapist or even a psychologist. Psychiatrists know how varied the symptoms of AS can be.

I can't be white. I mean, I've got a dark freckle on my arm.

That excludes me from being Caucasian, right?

My first examiner told me that I couldn't have AS because I don't wet the bed or torture helpless animals.

Good Effing Grief! I was 52 years old at the time!! !

She was also not affiliated with an HMO, PPO, or any other health-care organization. I got my official diagnosis from my HMO.

My two favorites that I both read on this forum were 1) not acting like Rainman, and 2) being too pretty.

WTF? Aren't these two of the three criteria of the Homicidal Triad?!

There's always the standard "You can't have AS, you're female". That one is frustrating (and the reason it too me so long to get my official diagnosis)

According to wikipedia
Quote:
The triad links animal cruelty, obsession with fire setting, and persistent bedwetting past the age of five to violent behaviors, particularly homicidal behavior.[2] Although other studies have not found statistically significant links between the triad of violence and violent offenders, many serial killers exhibited these behaviors during childhood. Contract killer Richard Kuklinski, serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and serial killer Dennis Rader all engaged in acts of animal cruelty.[3][4]

Really? How many Aspies have your therapist met? Then he should explain to me why my Aspie husband and daughter are always so concerned about what other people is thinking about them, and no matter how much or in which ways I tell them they should not worry about what other people would think about them, they cannot help themselves. I imagine your therapist will say both my kid's therapist and the neurologist who diagnosed her are wrong and she is not an Aspie. My recommendation: run. Get a new therapist and while you do that stop seeing this one.

First: Get a second opinion. It really sounds like all your therapist understands about AS is from the chapter he/she read about it in college. Find an expert to properly diagnose you. Second: I genuinely don't care at all what other people think about me. Never have.

Your therapist is wrong. I know plenty of people on the spectrum who are very self-concious.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

Sounds about as stupid as my psychiatrist: "You can't have aspergers since you've demonstrated you care about your family"

You have two options.

1) Find a therapist that actually understands Asperger's and autism
2) Educate your therapist on Asperger's and autism.

I suspect the second option has a low probability of success.
