echo that. 7 billion humans presently, which is about 1/15th of the humans that have ever lived. Which in itself is an interesting topic. i found this website that looks pretty thoroughly into the factors

of coarse your question would only be relevant to relatively recently when such a diversity of media is available. and furthermore WHERE this media is available, as it is not in developing countries that constitute the majority of the global population.
for the majority of our species existence your most closely analogous entertainment options are basically between staring at the fire, listening to stories from the shaman, and singing and dancing, which probably occurred in relative conjunction anyway.
tangents asside to more directly address your post, as far as reading, i have rarely read a book cover to cover. I do usually start at the beginning of a chapter where ever i chose to start up. However I read science books pretty exclusively, this same method would probably be very detrimental when reading a fictitious story, or even a history of sorts, where it is necessary to understand a plot which is presented in a chronological manner.
as far as being able to watch an episode out of order, i think most television shows, practically all to an extent, are in fact designed to be not crucially seen in order. An HBO series for example is in many cases designed that there is an ongoing story, parts of which you would not fully understand in their own right, but a single episode it usually made to present a section of the story that is for the most part entertaining on its own. If we are talking sitcoms and cartoons and such, these rarely are organized in any sort of chronological significance, and very loosely connected to the other episodes if at all.
