Someone in another post said.

Quote:
I've read in a few places now that bi-polar disorder (otherwise known as manic depression) and autism are related.

Which interested me because my dad is a manic depressive. So I wondered how many people on the spectrum are related to manic depressives.

I'm adopted so I don't know. My husband doesn't know of any relatives that are bipolar but there is quite a bit of other mental illness in his family. But it all seemed to be environmentally-related. Like schizophrenia caused by an massive head injury and others had insanity due to PTSD, but there probably were genetic dispositions.

People can go insane from post traumatic stress disorder?! That’s terrible my mom has that, and I really would rather she not go crazy.

I voted "no" but I only know my mother's half of the family. I haven't ever met my father or anyone on his side of the family, so I don't know about them.

My mother's side of the family has a good bit of schizophrenia, going back to the 1800's. They've also got depression, anxiety, ADD, learning disabilities and OCD.

An aunt had autism and my dad was bi-polar and or PPD-NOS, I have a bi-polar sister and a couple of first cousins who are bi-polar. A daughter of one of my cousins is seriously epileptic and severely ret*d. Life can be a real b***h sometimes.

Wow, me too. My sister was non-functional schizophrenic. My dad was functional for a good portion of his life and then non-functional. We all kind of thought it was due to all the drugs he took and perhaps abused, some legal prescriptions and some not. Both my sister and my dad seemed to get worse over time and were on a lot of drugs. I wonder if over-medication or miss-medicating can cause long-term problems, even after you stop or change drugs. It sure seems like the culprit but I can't be sure.

My brother was diagnozed bipolar but he doesn't think the DX fits him. He seems more AS if you ask me.
