When I was first diagnosed, in all the reading I did...I came across an idea: an aspie would have a business card size item, printed with something to the effect that they have Aspergers & they might get overly stimulated in public.

At first I thought that was an AWFUL idea, but now I'm not so sure....does anyone here use this (or anything like it?) If so, how's it working for you?

Thanks for the replies (my wishful thinking there....)

I have considered something like that, primarily for dealing with the police or other authority figures. The few times I've been pulled over, because of my silence, lack of contact, and inability to answer how they wanted, I've been misconstrued as being rude or otherwise, or simply belligerent, which typically results in punishment where I otherwise may have had a warning. This was especially true while I was a student in grade and high school.

I am curious to hear if anyone has used something like that, and what would be put on it exactly?

Im not sure what it would say if I personally made a card... I mean, mine could be something like "So sorry if I start crying and turn and run away, your frightening chit chat may drive me away" ahhh... :)

I am sure others will have much more helpful examples.

I'd love one but I'm too shy to ask to get one. There have been times where I needed to talk but I simply couldn't and people assumed I was choosing not to talk and being defiant.

I am intent on making one, but I can never think to buy cardstock while I am at the market. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if my printer will even print on card.

I can't say that I'd really benefit from this. I don't usually have a problem in those sorts of situations.

I've debated using the one AANE has put together for dealing with things like police officers, except that I want mine to have a slightly different description on it - while it says panic or lash out, I'd be much more likely to completely shutdown to the point where I go mute.

I do like the idea of having some way of telling people about my AS if its necessary, because I can't always do so myself.

The link didn't show up as a link until I "quoted" you. I was going to ask what is AANE, but now I'll just post this & use your link....

Thanks!

YES, that AANE card is the one/very similar to the one I saw before.

I would have to tailor something like that for me...some of my responses are atypical. Thank you, again for the link, Tuttle.

I've got an autism alert card, which was looked at during my last section 136 (police using the Mental Health Act to forcibly send me to hospital) and for once during a section I wasn't yelled at and nor did any of the officers or nurses/doctors say "look into my eyes". So if helped, because during my other sections I had a meltdown (although I was very ill at the time so that could have contributed to it) and ended up being handcuffed...

So it sounds like the card worked for you, SteelMaiden. Is it anything like the one Tuttle posted a link to?

It is somewhat similar, but its a National Autistic Society one (I live in the UK) and it folds out so that it has more detail. However it's not specifically designed for the police, it's also designed for paramedics if I happen to be found with a broken leg somewhere or similar. I also have a fold out card for my von Willebrand's disease as I could bleed to death if I am not given DDAVP.

This is the one that I use. http://www.buttonsandmore.com/ice/ulthm.htm

It is helpful, to avoid being treated as either a criminal or as mentally ill. On the back I list both names I go by, where I live, and the name and phone number of the person I live with.
