Integrated Listenging System
Has anyone heard of or tried the Integrated Listening System (http://integratedlistening.com/)? If so, did it work?
I am being told it can help calm my mind and reduce my shutdown response, which is a rather nice thought.
I'll read into it a bit more, but my first impression is 'gimmick,' and my first impulse is to reverse engineer the concepts behind it and make a cheap 'n nasty version for myself

That looks like a pretty cool therapy, and something that would definitely have a massive impact on development. It is, however, in my nature to smash concepts into their constituent parts and try to put them together again. So here goes
I found it a bit frustrating that there isn't much explanation of what's actually happening during the therapy. The intro video is entirely 'blah blah blah, neuroplasticity!' and talk of engaging multiple parts of the brain. I would like to point out that I managed to neuroplasticitise myself into a smoking habit etc etc. It's such a fantastic buzz word, but it's a simple enough concept. Repeated action = profit. I've come to auto-translate the term into 'developing mental habits.' Thankfully this clip gives a plain description of the therapy:
So it's a physical activity performed whilst music plays through headphones. Gotcha. The only unique part I can ascertain is that the top of the headphones has a vibrating speaker to represent low-frequency sound. I'm not sure what the technical term is for one of those, but I'm sure that the technology wouldn't be that expensive if you found the right supplier. The backpack obviously stores a battery pack for the mini-sub.
So here's presuming I've procured the gear and opened the Bungleton Center for Integrated Sensory Processing. Here's a few exercises:
- An audio presentation is played whilst the client draws or otherwise uses their hands.
Easy exercises could be listening to four instruments play a short melody whilst the client either copies a picture from a book or reads a card with a specific object on it before drawing. At the end of the audio, the client names the instruments.
A hard exercise would be listening to a speech whilst drawing a series of objects.
It could be used for general expansion of creativity... ie listening to music and drawing.
-A tone is generated and panned from hard left to right (so the sound is entirely in one ear,) as the client completes movement-based exercises.
Easy: Stand on your left leg when the sound is in your right ear, your right when the sound's on the left, and on both feet when it's in the center. This could be made more difficult by making the tone rise and fall in pitch as the exercises progress.
Hard: Squat up and down to this while sticking your arms out at the top for the offbeat (oom-PA, loom-PA, doompa-DEE doo etc etc.) Squat as deep as you can and your arms aren't allowed to come out until you're at the top. IN TIME TO THE MUSIC
-Focus on writing to a theme while listening to music with lyrics. I used to be able to!!
There you have it- that'll be $500 please, and I'll have the headphones back at the end of the session
NB: It would appear that I am a bit bored tonight
