I didn't know who I was for ages either, like you describe. But for me, finding out about AS and getting diagnosed made me more assertive about who I was and made me realise that I could stop fighting those aspie aspects of myself, as there was a scientific "reason" for my being an alien. I've since come to accept my alien-ness, and to focus on milking the joy out of life in my own alien way.
I think the moral of what you said in your post is that you should only spend time with people who say positive things about you, because then you will adopt those positive qualities.
By the way, if you haven't already, do check out the Woody Allen movie "Zelig". It's about a guy who, like a chameleon, turns into whoever he happens to be around.
