Tails the fox and Sonic are my newest obsession. After watching these videos, or at least listning to them, I wonder if the people this dude is describing could have AS. I remember when I was a kid, I had an "unhealthy" obsession with Lion King. Timon and Simba were kind of my imaginary friends...because I had no real friends. I had no idea what sex was at the time so I had no fantasies about marrying them or anything. I just had fantisies of him being my friend for real and actually having a friend. I could never feel this way twoards human characters so I don't know what this dude is saying by he can understand it when it is people. Maybe he just means wanting to have sex with them. I find the idea of humans knocking each up digusting. Anyway, it really kinda irks me when people say things like people who want to be friends with "2 dimensional" characters shouldn't be allowed. My Timon plushie was my best friend for years. At least he didn't make fun of me or tell me to stop obsessiong over him or reminded me I wasn't normal. Sometimes fictional characters are the only friends we have. Speaking of Sonic, is it just me or does Chris in Sonic X seem very aspieish? Anyway, has anyone here ever been accused of being one of these "fanbrats".

You don't need to feel bad about having obsessions, a lot of aspies do have them. I have a friend who is a big fan of Thomas the Tank engine and he's at least 30. I've also heard stories of people who have soft toys and need them to function who are adults. These people can still work if they have a supportive environment. Basically you can like anything you want and don't be ashamed of it. If people don't understand or are ignorant then just explain that you have Aspergers and it's common to have special interests in certain things.

I also think the guy in those videos is taking things way too seriously. He's talking about Sonic the Hedgehog like a psychologist and using words like "fantards" whatever that means as though they are real words. Don't listen to these people.

I am one of these people. I wish my parents didn't make such a big deal about my need to bring my Timon and Pumbaa plushies with me everywhere as a kid. They always tried to talk me out of bringing them with me and were so worried I would be carrying them around at 15. Why is that such a big deal? I need to hug my Timon plushie when I'm in the midst of a meltdown or just having a bad day. I've slept with him for years and still do. I actualy need him in order to fall alseep. No, I don't have sex with him. The thought of that is just gross. If Timon were real, I still wouldn't want to have sex with him. I think if something were to happen to him I would have a nervous break down or my personality would split. I plan to be burried with him.

I've learned from expirence that NT's don't understand special intrests. I could explain until the cows come home and I am still supposedly a "fantard" or I have a fetish. I'm not ashamed of my special intrests, I just wonder if the people this person is describing have AS. I had to deal with these people all the time as a kid in real life so I'm actualy fairly used to this mindset.

I think it's possible that a good portion of the so-called "fantards" have AS. Speaking from personal experience, people with AS tend to take their special interests very seriously, so it makes sense that they would argue about the details of it with others. And since people with AS have such difficulty making friends in real life, it would also make sense that they would enjoy pretending to be their favorite fictional character's best friend or love interest.

I could probably be classified as a Tim Burton "fantard". I take my interest in his movies way too seriously. I defend him whenever someone criticizes him - even if I don't directly confront the critic, I think hard about what they're complaining about and I rationalize it in my head so that they're always wrong and Tim is always right. Also, in my imaginary world, I like to pretend that I am good friends with all of the characters from Tim's movies. And I would be a liar if I said that I never had any sexual thoughts about them.

Yeah, I secretly want to punch that dude who made those videos and make him take a crash course in what it's like to be autistic.

I don't think that an obsession of this kind is exclusive to those with an ASD as I've known many NTs with "unhealthy" fixations on animated characters. Many children may come to admire a fictional figure to just such an extent, and not all of those children will have an ASD. Okay, so maybe most will, but I'm certain that NTs have similar feelings; I suppose that it depends largely on the intensity of said fixations.

I, myself, have always had a slight crush on a certain character from Pokemon who shall not be named for fear of reprisal.

But are NT's that obsessive about it? I personaly think it is impossible for a true NT to have a special intrest.

I used to have a slight crush on a certain character from Sailor Moon when I was younger.

I think the word "fantard" extends to anyone who won't accept criticism of something they like. Are all Justin Bieber fans Aspies, then?

No, just little girls not famaliar with the real world yet. I think what this dude describes as "fan tards" aparently are adults. Justin Bieber seems to be a very acceptable obsession for pre pubesnt girls so I don't think a little girl who was "obsessed" with him would be considered weird or ret*d or anything of those sorts.
