I'm interested in taking some social skills classes. Where are these offered?

Frankly, I would like to hear ASPIES say how well they work first. I'm sick of going to classes that CLAIM to help only to find the teacher is worse than I am!

How about books? Are there any useful books about this sort of thing?

If you live in the U.S., you might want to check with the nearest chapter of the Asperger's Association. I know the Asperger's Association of New England offers group gatherings designed to promote social skills...though I'm not sure if they are actually classes. Nevertheless they are a great resource with lots of information.

I think Speech/Language Pathologists are usually responsible for teaching social skills and running social skills classes for students in school. You could ask local Speech/Language Pathologists about such classes, but I'd bet that it would be much harder to find social skills classes if you are an adult.

And of course psychotherapists would work with you on social goals, as they would on any personal goals. My psychotherapist is supposed to do role playing with me and work on eye contact with me.

Thank you for the information, logitechdog and umbra. I want to improve my social life and am willing to pay for classes to improve it if necessary. (My parents have been and will be of no help beyond comforting but not very helpful spiritual advice.)

You might want to ask your consulor at a Grade School. Those can help a lot. Especially considering the fact that i took one not too long a go
at the middle school i went to in Lecanto, Florida. It did work and i did meet some new friends

Umbra I guess things are different all across the US. I belong to the autism society in my county, but they offer no support/training for Aspies of any age. They only offer training about how to identify AS to social services type "professionals". For the Aspies we can come to the meetings and talk and be accepted but there is no services for us. Oh! I take that back. The local guidance center made the offer to allow Aspies to join in a discussion group for get this alcoholics, personality disorders, bi-polar and maniac depressives. What the hell?! I'm autistic...why would I want to join a group for any of those things because I do not have those. Also alcoholics have always been the ones that emotionally abused me so why would I want to be surrounded by them so they could take turns insulting me in a group therapy session.

I begin a course for partially sighted people in a week's time which will deal with basic social, personal development and assertiveness skills. I guess I'm quite lucky having sight difficulties because there's absolutely no provision for people with Asperger's Syndrome who have social and other difficulties in the county in which I live.

Maybe that would have worked better if you had large and then small fonts.

Yep. Looked everywhere - all over the county. The only thing that was remotely near was local but was entirely unsuitable for us. The course that I found is in Greater Manchester and looks absolutely perfect.
