I've noticed I will often lose all motivation and interest in obsessions in around 2-20 days, often leaving much unfinished business.
How would I stop this from happening? :?

You can't. Trying to stop the ebb and flow of obsessions is fruitless. You'd have better luck trying to change the weather, at least, in my experience.

When a person loses interest and motivation, those are the times discipline becomes relevant. Do what needs doing even though you don't desire to do it. Motivation will likely return more quickly because you haven't dug yourself into a hole of trouble to overcome once you feel more energized.

Personally, I store anything relevant to the obsession away until the obsession comes back. I indulge any other obsessions I have in the meantime. I wouldn't want to force myself to do something I don't have interest in merely because there are unfinished things. I have stuff like ground almonds and powdered food colouring from my macaron obsession, a partially crocheted blanket from my crocheting obsession, and various paints and plastic sheets from my stencilling obsession. They're all waiting for the time that I get re-obsessed with them. It's nice to know I have places to pick up from when the time comes, instead of having to start from the beginning.

Since I've gotten older, I've found that the average lifespan of any special interest is only 3 months. It actually causes me a bit of depression to lose the interest. I also feel lost, like I am no longer anchored in my life. The times I don't have any interests are really bad and I sometimes try to force another new interest, but it just doesn't work. The only thing you can do is wait for another.

When I was a kid my interests would last for years! I can't seem to function like that anymore.

Regular exercise might help. I usually feel better and more inspired after a long walk or a bike ride.

I myself look for academic disciplines to have an interest in , my final choice mathematics , it's basically art. I loved art when I was a kid and I loved painting. Now since I'm more adroit , Mathematicians are just like poets who paint pictures with words , instead we paint with symbols.

Try to be attached to more of what you were like when you were a kid. Being yourself would help.

When you regain your interest , possibly by overcoming depression , read around enthusiastic books on your subject or watch videos related to what you like.
