Caucasians and autism/aspergers

Ok I definatley don't believe this, but has anyone heard anything about autism/asperger's being more common within the caucasian race?

I really don't believe it, but I have noticed that all the other aspies I've met in real life (there have been very few) are all white. And all the aspies I've met in support groups as well have all been white.

More diversity please?

I've read that autism spectrum is more or less an even percentage among the different races. Which is surprising, given that non-africans are supposedly part neanderthal. One might expect there to be difference, one way or the other.

I wonder if people with autism spectrum conditions of other races are less likely to be diagnosed.

Possibly. They may be told to "suck it up" and overcompensate with music and rhythm. "I like big butts and I cannot lie, you other brothers can't deny...."

Or maybe different populations have different proportions of spectrum folks... and that explains differences in culture, rates of technological advancement, and so forth.

maybe people of other races see a raw deal when someone hands it to them and they are smart enough not to get their kids DXed

Diagnosing of autism is a very, very new phenomena. But autism is very ancient, that's why it is seen at similar rates across cultures by those who have looked. Before seeing it through the "diagnosis" lens, autistics were percieved as "slow", "odd", "witches", "shamans", "lunatics", "eccentrics", "savants", "geniuses" or probably a thousand other names depending on the culture and time period.

I think the majority of people in our society who have autism are white because white people are simply the majority. I could be wrong, but I don't believe it is more prevelant in one race than another. The first autistic person I met who I knew was autistic is Arab.

I know a Chinese person who has aspergers, but almost everyone else I know with it is white.

There have been several threads recently with Asians and Blacks reporting in, though not so many Blacks. I remember one very frequent poster is Asian, though not her nick -- she uses a sunflower as an avatar.

As for cannibalism, it's been in all races, and within recorded history: you don't just need to look for skulls of extinct varieties of humans broken in such a way as to get the brains out.

If you subscribe to the idea that ASDs are the result of toxic lifestyles then it follows that Caucasians had a head start.

Thankfully, there's no evidence for such a thing so we can safely discard it.

For people who say that they mostly know white autistic people, how many people of color in general do you know as compared to white people?

I can think of two Desi women who post here, both of whom are autistic. Daspie is also Desi (I think). One friend of mine I've been acquainted with online for probably 10-11 years is black and autistic. Another autistic friend of mine is black and Latina. I know a guy from a Southeast Asian country but I cannot at the moment remember the name (this isn't one of those "they all blend together moments" this is presque vu). I know another autistic woman who's also from Southeast Asia (I do not know where she's from) who lives in the US.

There are no doubt others I am forgetting at this point.

i might be wrong but i think this seems because western culture is more acceptable to Aspies? and by that we might be more often diagnosed with it..
