I can generally understand tone and I believe I can understand the emotional content of someone's tone of voice. Well, someone opened the door for me and I said "Thank you" and I noticed it sounded VERY monotone and robotic (You're supposed to say "Thank you" with a rising pitch on "Thank", and with a decreasing pitch when you say "you".). Jeez, I felt so autistic.

Do you think you sound robotic when you speak, sometimes?

At my old job they would occasionally send "mystery shoppers" to evaluate the quality of customer service.

Once a "mystery shopper" wrote a report that said I was robotic.

I've been told that I sound monotonous and emotionless. I don't really care though, and I doubt the people whom I interact with care. If someone's so bothered by another person's demeanor, they should set their priorities straight. I can damn well talk like friggin' Robocop if I please and people'll just have to put up with it.

I have been told that I am monotonous a few times, but that was in Speech class. *shutters*
But, no, I do not think I sound like a robot.

Overall, you sound bored and at least slightly depressed. You also sound like you're getting impatient near the end of the list of words you cite.

You win the million dollar prize. And you don't have Aspergers now.

I'm told very very often how monotone I sound. I don't think I sound monotone at all. Matter of fact, I think I have the coolest sounding voice in the entire world. So no, I do not think I sound like a robot, but other people do. That, and I have this odd thing too where my lips don't match the words coming out of my mouth.

Really? Is that all it takes??

Did you test any other aspies on this test?

[I know my response here seems autistic because I took what you wrote seriously when I know it was actually sarcastic, or at least I think it is. Or maybe you're laughing because you find it sooooooooo funny it was so easy to end someone's 8 month search with a simple tonal test.)

No on the test.

You hit all three-- bullseye. I got the depressed impression myself. I think it's that usual low ADD energy. It's my birthday present so it is hard for me to tell if it really is "depressed," as there there isn't a baseline score.

But yeah, you got it and frankly I was surprised.

That's pretty interesting. My ADD test proctor had some kind of test from the pearson's educational test company and one of the questions was something like "Do you mope around and lack energy nearly all day?". I was like, WOAH, how did this test KNOW??? Anyway, it seems that lacking energy is fairly common for ADD people which seems to contradict my impression of ADHD people being people who are bouncing off the walls all day, full of energy.

(I thought ADD and ADHD are fairly synonymous, but I could be wrong.)

Hey, is it OK if I could use your voice sample to make a "tonality test" poll?

Yes, but how could you un-bias the results?

I feel that way sometimes. I have been told my voice is monotone and I have been told it changes so I think it's off and on.

It was not seriously meant? I didn't do the test, because I don't like doing things I don't know, but I assumed it was meant for real...
BTW, I speak quite monotone and low, but my psychologist said when I start talking about a special interest I get more 'colour' in my voice.
But "like a robot"? I guess not, because I associate it with a sort of "metallic" sound no human can ever do.

I was thinking about making a poll and giving it a lot of options. I was thinking about just letting people write about it, but that has problems since people can see others' posts. I was thinking about using PM, but that's a lot of manual work.

If you're talking about "subjective bias" (The difference in opinions between a 'biased' rater and a 'biased' person being tested), then it'd be better to get a pool of neurotypicals to norm the test. There seems to be a few NTs on the boards...

Anyway, for something like this, it would be a lot better if there were multiple questions and multiple voice samples. So, I'm going to first research if there is a problem with tone recognition with those with autism (I'm not sure if this is the case), and then I might produce a test. Maybe. I doubt it because I'm unmotivated, but I might.
