I'm going overseas for three weeks next month. I usually find it extremely stressful (while I'm there as well as the lead up). But I have an immense passion for seeing and experiencing other cultures.

This will be my first trip since being diagnosed with AS. I am hoping that now understanding myself better, I will be able to find more ways that will work for me so that it is not so traumatic.

Does anyone have any good travel tips relating to the challenges of AS?

The things that I struggle with most are flying and all kinds of transport, and being away from my home (I feel like I can never ground myself, I'm constantly on the edge of meltdown or in meltdown). Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I love traveling too. For me the tricks revolve around increasing familiary, feeling more at home anywhere and decreasing stimulus. And if you can dealing with any logistics you can before you set out eg. online booking.

I always have shades with my traveling and a good set of earphones that block out noise and I use them as discreate ear plugs even if i'm not listening to music. I where the shades anywhere it doesn't look to weird. I don't just do this when I'm on the verge of a meltdown a lot is preventative. It's easier said then done but try to keep your stress level down.

To feel more at home I always carry a laptop loaded with TV shows and Movies, lots new and a couple of favorites. I sometimes put movies on my phone too, but I usualy have a few audio books. I also always have zen meditation music, sometimes it's the closet thing you can get to silence some time.

Get a good nights sleep.

I always put a little work into my blood sugar level, keep it up and even. Try not to eat badly when traveling; I have a good meal before I head out and I keep granola bars on me when I travel if I feel I'm getting drowsy I have one. No very sugary stuff like chocate bars, the sugar crash can lead to a meltdown.

Don't be afraid to go hand out in a bathroom stall if you need to.
I thinks thats all I have.
