This is old news. Is there something specific about this that you wish to discuss?

There's some pretty long threads about it here at WP. Do a search and you'll find some interesting discussion.

As long as we are still DXed on the Autism spectrum and getting the supports we need I don't care if they get rid of the word Aspergers. I'll probably still call myself an aspie. As long as I'm getting the help I need I don't really care what they do with the new DSM. I'm actually a little excited that schizophrenia might be getting it's own spectrum. Hopefully they'll get rid of stupid personality disorders like schizotypal and schzoid. I'm hoping with the new DSM they'll look at people's individual symptoms without lumping them into a one dimensional diagnosis.

Holy cow man. With a username like MasterJedi, and 2000 posts, you're just discovering this? 8O

Wow. Do you have ADHD too?

It is, as others have said, all over these forums.

I have a bit of a problem with this, as the public perception of Aspergers is different than the perception of Autism and I don't think things would be good for me if all they know about me is that I have "Autism" instead of Aspergers.

I don't. As far as I'm concerned, it's about time the general public learn that AS is Autism. It's about time everyone learn that the stereotype of Autism is inaccurate.

I use the terms Asperger Syndrome and Autism interchangeably. Why not? It is what it is. It's time people learned the truth.

I wouldn't worry too much. When the spectrum gets merged into one category, it might be some confusion at first, but with all the new Aspies in that category, people should understand pretty quickly that ASD includes many people who can talk anytime they like and take care of themselves without help. That will benefit the people who are now considered "high-functioning autistic", too, because right now they are often underestimated by people who only know they're autistic, and don't realize that autistic people can be and often are skilled and independent.

I won't lie to you; I think there will be some adjustment and some confusion. But in the end it should be a positive change, as people learn there's a lot of variation on the spectrum and you can't make assumptions.

.....now I feel that I'm a horrible, selfish elitist.....in my defense I have had traumatizing expiriences related to perception of autism, and on multiple occasions I have denied having autism. I guess that for most people this would be beneficial in the long run, but I don't see how it would have any directly positive effects for myself, and it in the short run it might negatively effect me.

Don't feel horrible. I didn't think of that aspect of it until I'd turned it over in my mind quite a lot. Everybody hates to be stereotyped and we get enough of it that it would be logical that we'd be pretty leery of anything that looked like we'd get more of the same.

They aren't completely removing anything from the DSM.

I think the OP is talking about the removal of the specific term "Asperger's" as it gets merged with other ASDs into the "Autism Spectrum Disorder" category.

Well yeah, not quite the same thing as removing the entire disorder from the DSM.

I agree. If AS is really a form of autism it should be called that. The people who get diagnosed with AS differ so much among themselves anyway. I'm all in favour of one big umbrella for all forms of autism.
