Being aspies, I hope/expect y'all won't get mad or read inferences where I mean none.

Someone in my family was recently diagnosed with asperger's and it seems like all the symtoms fit me as well. I have one white elephant of a doubt that I'd like to explore.

Genetic or learned?

It just seems to me that our condition in many ways mimicks "middle child syndrome" on steroids. This symtom is what I've always blamed my own behavior on. Is it possible that they are one in the same or somehow connected?

My slightly older brother always bested me at everything, teaching me (I assumed) not to compete or try to excel. He took my friends from me, teaching me that I was inferior in social interaction. My only justification and recourse was through demanding fairness instead of negotiating socially.

My recently diagnosed family member is also the middle child with a slightly older brother that runs over him in the same way.

Is there a link here? Even in the two's and threes hardwiring is still being set. Is it possible that environment has some factor? Are aspies generally middle children?

Where do you place in the family?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm the First Born. My sister has surpassed me in every way possible, except for Intelligence.

I am the youngest of three brothers and I am adopted. My brothers are 2.5,6,9 years older then me.The two older brothers ignored me and the brother closest to me hated me and still does(at46!).
I dont think the birth order(adopted order)has as much influence on me as being the only female and being adopted.

Yeah, I don't know too many families that even have more than 2 offspring. I'm adopted and youngest female of 2 kids. My brother is 4 years older, 3 grades ahead of me. My friend believes her 2 half brothers are Asperger's or autistic and they are significantly older than her-they were the bullies in the family too-according to her.

My oldest brother is autistic, my other brother is not, and I'm the youngest and I am. We're quite possibly the inversion of what you're describing. :P

I'm the ldest and diagnosed. My youngest brother has a few aspie traits. Sensative smell, sensative taste, and he was very hard to dicipline (spelling). He always wanted things his ways and things had to be doen a certain way when he was a toddler and he always hit his older brother but the punishments my mother gave him weren't working so she went onto giving Mike permission to hit Ben (my youngest brother) back whenever he hits him. Then he stopped eventually. He also outgrew being a picky eater when my mother stopped making food for him so she always had him have the same food everyday he liked because he didn't want to eat what she made for dinner. He eventually got tired of having the same thing over and over everyday for dinner, so he started eating what my mother made. He still has sensative smell though. He is an NT.

I am the oldest of my blood siblings I have a younger brother and sister who are twins they live with my mum. And I'm the youngest of my step siblings, I have two older step brothers.

I see alot of myself in my younger brother (so I think he may have AS or atleast AS traits) including the bad spelling. That could be due to my dad being severly dyslexic.

Im the youngest with an older sister who is NT.

The only real interaction we had growing up was she didnt want to play with me because I was "weird" same reaction as everyone else so thats kinda ruled out.

I'm the oldest, but the other three are half-siblings. Honestly, I've never met my father, so I may have more half-siblings on his side.

You forgot the 'only child' option. I'm an only child (well adult), my oldest dx'd on the spectrum son is my first child of course, my youngest is possibly on the spectrum too.

I'm the first of four. My three siblings are NT.

My father, who has ADHD, is the second of nine siblings.
