I have an iPhone 4S, on which I noticed a dreadful feature; a call alert flash (using the camera flashbulb). After I downloaded IOS5, the feature turned itself on. It's set up for the camera flashbulb to fire repeatedly when a call or message alert comes in, which for me, is a recipe for a sensory overload. I had to put a piece of black tape over mine, as it turned itself back on AGAIN after I had disabled it in call settings. I'm not sure if or how to prevent it, so better safe than sorry. To check or set it: Settings > General > Accessibility > LED flash for alerts on/off.

So for those like me, who don't do well with bright bluish strobe flashing, beware!

Thanks for the heads-up. I also have an iPhone 4S, and was wondering why the phone flashed whenever I get a call. I just disabled it.

The feature was indeed off until I downloaded that battery fix update. Some of my Facebook friends who have iPhone 4S's said their phones flashed when they received calls, too, but for a bit I just wondered if they had messed-up phones or something. And despite the update, it seems to have done nothing to prolong the phone's battery life.
