These days I know so many people (mostly men) who are into computers, and are far from nerds. I know somebody who loves computers. He used to teach computers at a local college, and he knows everything about them, and if you bring up computers to him, he will enjoy listening to you. He is not Aspie, and he is not a nerd either. He's a cocky bloke who is very chatty and he sits up the pub drinking beer and doing other social mainstream stuff. He ain't that bright - he just likes computers. I also know another person who builds computers. He built me the computer I have now, and knows everything about them. He is nowhere near a nerd though.

I think, nowadays, it is actually quite stereotypical to look as ''people who like computers'' as nerds. Children are brought up with computers now. You have to go online and apply for jobs nowadays (I know that because I'm on job-seekers myself). Also people order shopping online, sell things online on Ebay, download their pictures and music and other stuff like that on media player, and spend most of their time on all these social sites, not just Facebook but other things. I think that nowadays you're out of the norm if you don't own or use a computer.

Computers seem cool to me now. All the cool kids have little ones in their pockets, and take them everywhere they go.

Not anymore. There was a time that it did.

But who cares? Nerds are cool!

"Nerd" actually requires not only being slavishly devoted to the intelectual and academic, but also requires unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept.

In the early days of computers, one almost HAD to be all of those things to really be into computers, due to the vast amount of time effort and immersion required to understand them and get anything worthwhile done with them. Computer nerds in the early days didn't have time to concern themselves with fashion or social graces.

I honestly think the fact that computers eventually became cool, is one of the most important reasons nerds eventually became "cool."

If it weren't for nerds, we wouldn't have all these cool devices.

What's the difference between a nerd and a geek?

Are nerds cool or are people cool who use nerdish things without actually being the obsessed creature which is generally identified with the term 'nerd'?

Geek is a sub-category of nerd. Geeks are specifically geared toward technology, so the nerds I'm talking about are geeks.

Where you been for the last thirty years? Do you watch much TV? Nerds are cool. They've been slowly but surely infiltrating high rated movies, TV shows and music.

Ever heard of:

Revenge of the Nerds?

Big Bang Theory?

Elvis Costello?

Devo? (The Mothersbaugh brothers have been writing music for TV and movies for almost thirty years now)

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of others.

Just watch and listen to a lot of stuff. They're everywhere now. And it's not just nerds that are cool, acceptance of them is now also cool. All you've got to do is pay attention.
