I am wondering if people with Asperger's syndrome have a higher than normal resting heart rate for people in their age and sex cohort. When people are stressed or feeling anxious, they tend to have higher pulses. Since people with Asperger's syndrome are especially at risk of developing anxiety and depressive mood disorders, this is one source of an elevated heart rate. I also suspect lack of physical exertion plays a role. Let's face it: Most of us don't exercise regularly and vigorously (I do, though).

I am 21 years old, male, and just measured my pulse (on my wrist) as 68 beats per minute. Normal for an adult is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. Trained athletes tend to average about 50 beats per minute, though. If you need to check whether your heart beat is low or high for your age/sex cohort, do a Google search.

  • Tachycardia > 100 heart beats per minute
  • Bradycardia < 60 heart beats per minute

My pulse and my blood pressure both tend to be at the low end of normal.

My resting heart rate is currently 60bpm, but has been lower in the past. A year & more ago it was at 56bpm. I do exercise five days a week though, doing both weight training and running.

My maximum heart rate though is not normal for my age. The typical formula one uses to approximate maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. I’m 37, therefore my heart rate should top out around 183bpm. That isn’t even close, as last week I measured my heart rate at 196bpm while running and that wasn’t 100% effort.

I’m going to try and determine my maximum heart rate soon by running uphill.

My resting heart averages in the low 60's, it's around 66 right now.
My blood pressure is also low-normal, at around 110 over 60.

Peculiarly I have many of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, but as I mentioned, low blood pressure and a low heart rate.

I have a high heart rate, but it's probably to do with my medication, not AS.

Hypothesis...
If we use exercise as a way to center and improve interaction /reaction - our heart rates will generally be lower.

Also heart rate depends on general health - factors like obesity etc. Since most aspies I know (4) have food preferences (color, temperature, different foods touching) we tend to be on the thin side which may also affect hr

My heart rate is generally below 60 when resting. My blood pressure is generally in the 120/80 area.

My pulse is usually 53-57; I am taking 5 medications for high blood pressure, which might explain the low rate. It used to be 72, several years ago.

My blood pressure always used to be low. But now since I'm having glucose problems and one of the symptoms is tachycardia, my resting pulse right now is 102. I ate dinner not too long ago. It was faster then.

I took my resting heart rate, and it was at exactly 80 beats per minute (bpm). But, my active heart rate is around 220 or 230 bpm, and I excercise 5-6 days out of the week (45 mins. to an hour most days in winter conditioning). So, I think my heart is pretty healthy, or at least I hope so.
