This is related to SSI, money you get from the Government, because you have Autism.

Have You ever had to put extra SSI money in an account called "Burial Fund?"

The banker then gives You and the person who drove you to the bank, a funny confused/horrified look, but then sets up the account.

What happened if you had to this, and what did the situation feel like?

It made me feel mad/confused.

I haven't even been approved yet, despite working at it for well over a year. :x

I was denied the first time I applied. I need to apply again or else I won't be able to pay my portion of rent. :(
I can NOT have that happen!

I'm not on ssi but I'll give my opinion.

I don't see how they can make you do this.

I don't see why the banker would react that way. Making a burial fund would mean you are thinking of the future and not wanting to be a burden on your family if you die and they suddenly need to come up with several thousand dollars to bury you.

I was denied again and again. The next step is supposed to be going in front of a judge, but the last I heard of that was basically "we'll call you when we feel like it." And if a judge turns me down, I get to apply all over again. My psychologist was bluntly honest with me, telling me that people are basically chosen at random to be approved. He's seen people turned down who very clearly needed it, and he's seen people approved who were just looking for a handout they didn't need. Several people on these forums have advised me to get a lawyer, but I've tried to, and none of them will take me unless I'm on meds. Which you typically don't even get for AS! It's an endless ring of BS.

aw. I am so sorry to hear that! I really hope I can get it. I am very nervous. I know I am not able to work. I have Asperger's as well as Fibromyalgia and I have a lot of trouble communicating as well as other things because my body is like an 100 year old woman's. It is horrible. I wish you the best of luck!

It's American. It's the kind of disability you can get if you are disabled but don't have enough work credits to get ssdi.

I filled out an online form for it recently but they sent me a letter giving me a almost a week to call them and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I don't like to talk on the phone with people I don't know. It can be hard to get ssi and I'm not even diagnosed with anything so it's likely I'd get denied anyways.

Yep, it's an American thing.

SSI: Supplemental Security Income
It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Aka "welfare." I believe Britons call this "the Dole."

OP, I was approved for SSI+SSDI about 10 years ago and I've never been asked to set up a "burial account." It seems really weird that you'd be asked to do that.

My grandmother was on ssi and they never asked her to do that. She had life insurance though. She actually had to cash in one of her policies early because the welfare told her that if she didn't she wouldn't qualify for medicaid.

I think the Burial Fund is probably a scam. I would investigate and figure out how to get your money out of it.

I was approved the first time when mom signed me up for it and I see it as a big joke because there are people out there who are more disabled than me and those who are truly unable to work and they get denied or keep getting denied while I was approved the first time. Even severe aspies get denied and I got approved? My mother didn't even exaggerate either.

I have never heard of a burial fund. I had my regular checking account.

I am not American but I am on the British version of ssi which is Employment support allowance, Disability Living Allowance and in my case I also get severe disability allowance. However my diagnosis is one of anxiety, depression and severe social anxiety. I qualified because I cannot cope with social interaction and also struggle to cope with changes to my routine etc. I am also pretty housebound these days.

Being on disability can help but the down side is that people can confuse your disability for learning disorder and tend to talk to you like you are slow or something (I am an A average academically thank you! lol). Yes I may misinterpret people but I do understand things! Things are not confusing in the way that people are!

Anyway, we have no equivalent of a Burial fund in the UK as far as I am aware and whilst I am not part of the American system, I would look into that as it does not sound right actually. I agree that with another poster above that it could be a scam.
