I need some winter clothing ideas that don't require tight-fitting layers. I want to stay warm, but I absolutely can't stand the feeling of leggings, etc (in fact, I won't even wear a lot of the nice female shirts because they require a camisole underneath). Are there any good types of pants out there that will work in freezing temperatures without long johns underneath???

i dont dress for winter, i wear whatever. Don't be suprised to see me in a t shirt year round. It only recently occurred to me that you can be a lot warmer if you wear a jumper and a t shirt under your coat. I'm a little dim :).

I tend to wear whatever.

I even used to go to school in t-shirt and shorts in the middle of winter during really bad cold snaps. The only time I would bundle up is if it was rain/sleet/ice/snow, or if I was shoveling snow. Of course, since I live in the poconos, its kind of common to see other people doing the same thing other than the elderly and little kids.

A felt military cloak, perhaps from WWI or II. Like a long coat w/o sleeves, had a big hood. Has buttonable slits that you can poke your hands out of if you need to unlock a door or something.

I'm not joking. I used to own one of these and it was INSANELY warm, even in Minneapolis in the dead of winter when it's too cold to snow for weeks on end.

Lots of freedom of movement. No tight clinging sleeves, etc. They usually have shoulder straps so they it be unbuttoned and then thrown over one or both shoulders. In a car, it's like having a thick blanket to wrap around yourself.

The cloak, when buttoned up, acts as a chimney: funneling warmth generated by your legs (from walking, etc) up to your torso and arms.

Sure does look funny, but honestly after wearing one of these for a few seasons, I have no idea why they went out of style. A longcoat made of the same material offers only about 25% of the warmth that a cloak does.

Jeans are the worst thing to wear in the winter.

Denim, although comfortable, is a failure as a fabric. When it's warm, it swells up, closing the weave and preventing breathing. When it's cold, the fibers shrink, opening up pores and failing to trap heat. It is only practical in a room temperature environment.

I agree but it's the fleece lining that makes them feel very comfortable. I personally wear my cycling tights under jogging pants or rain pants. Cycling clothing is tight but comfortable and keeps me dry.

I wear a lot of long skirts, and I've even layered them when it's really cold. Looks bohemian but it's really comfortable and warm.

I like the cloak idea. A friend of mine has one and it's really warm. I want to make one when I have the extra money to buy some fleece.

I had a pair of fleece lined overalls when I was a kid. I honestly wish I never outgrew them. Best thing ever.

I'm afraid I can't be of much help, as I wear leggings and a camisole underneath everything. A lot of athletic companies have pants designed for being outdoors, though. I'm sure there are some acceptable- looking variations of snow pants out there. The internet is worth a look.

Try this place: http://www.duluthtrading.com/ if you don't mind simple looking work clothes. Their clothing is very comfortable with unrestricted movement in mind. It's also durable as well. I bought some fleece lined carpenter pants from them, a jacket and some turtlenecks.
