This paragraph is a lipogram: It avoids a symbol that is fifth in a familiar list of thirty minus four. How many words can you post without using it? Gadsby is fifty thousand words long without this symbol, but I doubt that any of us can accomplish that at this forum; it's just too difficult.

It is an arduous task to avoid using that particular symbol, I must admit. As that symbol is not a consonant and is ubiquitous throughout our usual writings, it is hard to focus for long on not using it. How was it totally missing from a work of so many words, it is truly amazing how that author's writing could flow and avoid this major constraint for such a duration. I do not think I can sustain it for long, my brain is starting to hurt from straining to think so hard right now, and trying to avoid clumsy phrasing and grammatical slips in my submission. This was a tricky post to try out and I will stop my lipogram at this point - good topic, Dan... why couldn't you pick a symbol such as 'x' which is not so hard to avoid? 8O

Dunc

* had to look again and again at this post - loads of symbols snuck past which I did not spot at first... its just too hard. :P

I think I will try it. I am having difficulty just starting out. This is a good way of practicing vocabulary, and finding ways of arranging words that you would not normally do.

I think my vocabulary consists of about two to four ways of saying things. I am going to stop now, or my brain may combust.

I was going to point your post's flaws, but you found that "bad" symbol prior to my clicking "Submit".

That's cheating.

Anyway, I don't understand this:

Quote:
Gadsby is fifty thousand words long without this symbol

Knowing how this particular symbol is most common of all non-consonant symbols, typing a 50,000 word book without this symbol could cloud all but most brilliant minds.

Iris was not happy in Junior High School. Iris could not stand how this annoying, sassy girl, Nazalia, would always try to start rumors about Iris. Iris, who turned 12 as of May 8th, 2003, was not physically fit and did not want to play sports at all. If anything hurt Iris's body, Iris would run out of class and to a lavatory. Iris also could not stand Mrs. Martin, who taught a stupid class that Iris almost did not pass. Mrs. Martin would pass out ridiculous handbooks that basically said "If you do not know how to distinguish words, distinguish words in this book and it'll show you how to distinguish words!" Iris just thought, "This is so dumb! I know how to distinguish words! I could distinguish 40 words whilst I was 2! Anyway, how can you distinguish words in that book if you don't know how to do it? Stupid."
Iris sat right in front of Mrs. Martin's icky chair, and would find out lots about Mrs. Martin's habitual antagonization. If Iris thought that class was boring on that day, or if Iris was sad, Iris would look at a mirror and look at it. That was what would spark Mrs. Martin to annoy Iris. "Iris, put that mirror away now!" "No, Iris, you may not go to a lavatory!" "Iris, no talking in class!" Iris would talk back: "Antagonization, Mrs. Martin, puts you in a position in which I can grow spitish." Mrs. Martin did punish Iris, but did not stop antagonizing Iris. Iris could not stand Mrs. Martin.
Iris did not hang out with any companions, so Iris was sad. That is, until Iris found an individual with a similar idiosyncrasy....

to be continued....

this task fashions within my top most part a pain of atypical brutality, and soon said pain shall without fail, cross forthwith into my hindmost part. "Why would I join in"? you ask. "I am a dork!" I own up. and that is my justification.

I do not have much motivation to produce a long paragraph which avoids using that particular symbol. I am too lazy.

I think this topic is totally without any point or worth - why would any individual wish to go on, wasting such normally invaluably worthy spans of hours, propogating such absurdity throughout our computing highways? My own act of "mortal coil" transitioning has abounding distraction and difficulty in it as it is now, without adding in this paltry complication to it...... You should all act compunctiously for this ludicrous act of triviality.....

....and you only need a decent thesaurus to fake it anyway :)
