the duration of obsessions

I have obsessions but they are shortlived. If they continued maybe I would become more of an expert on one subject, each obsession lasts from a few weeks to a few months then disappears. AS and ADHD combo! Each one ends abruptly due to frustration with not getting it perfect or the drive just evaporates.

wow that sounds crazy to me, I can only totally obsess over one thing, which since about the age of 16 has been sound... I guess I occasionally get obsessive with reading, and spend a few months going through every single book I possibly have.. But generally when one thing is in my focus, I try to do everything else in little bits on the side.. Which means I have total obsession over a girl, or she's just a little playing piece on the side..

Maybe what you need to do is find something thats always changing, something you can learn thats malleable and flexible enough for you to always feel some growth, but not get frustrated at the size and amount of time it takes to achieve..

I can obsess with either one to three things at a time and the duration typically lasts anywhere from thee months to four or more years. The average time span is about a year.

Mine tend to vary, some last a long time, some forever, and some for only a few weeks.
I have a long standing 'hobby' with Russian history.
A few weeks ago I was really into Kendo, I still enjoy it, but not as much as I did then. Basically it was an obcession that turned into a real hobby.
Right now Im just really bored though

My obsessions run 6 months to a lifetime.

I've been obsessed with Routemasters for almost 27 years now, and I'm not shamed of it.

I was obsessed with dinosaurs for years. That changed to lizards, which I collect from time to time. I have had others, but interestingly, I have not had anything I would call an obsession for a few years, though when I still occasionally dabble in old ones. I would say I just have interests that I am passionate about. I'm a polisci major so I love politics, but its not something I would call aspergers obsession. But my passion for topics tends to be helpful for example, I am learning Arabic. I have kindof gotten out of practice, being busy with school, but I used to spend all day teaching it to myself.

My obsessions run anywhere from 6 weeks to a lifetime and they come back to haunt me at later times. I think a new obsession overrides the cuurent one and then when I have no new obsessions the old ones come back or something triggers me and I revert to and old obsession

It depends...i have some of my obsessions since I was a kid, some other of a medium range (almost 1yr-3 yrs) and some that just last 15 days-6 months...some of my obsessions do cycles, i forget them for a while and then they come back

Some hobbies I suppress just because I am so busy with school, and I know that if I got into them it would take up too much of my time. But once I'm out and doin 9-5 job, I think I'll be able to devote more times to hobbies in the evenings and weekends. No homework hanging over my head.

Mine tend to last about 2 years on average but some are short-lived. Usually have about 2-3 going at any given time.
Currently it's Guild Wars (3,500 hours over 15 months), racing sims (off and on since I was a teenager) and flight sims (same as the racing one).
I'd list all the past ones but that'd take forever.

edit: Oh, and news. I can't function if I haven't read the news when I get up. CNN.com, BBC.co.uk, CBC.ca and some others. Not reading the news really gets my day out of whack.

My main one's 16 years and counting.

Aside from that one, they usually last at least a few years.

It depends. Reading and making explosives will probably follow me trough life, as will philosophy and astronomy. Other obsessions, like collecting stamps and coins, have just passed by.

Mine can last anywhere from a day to a lifetime.

For example, my obsession with Wrong Planet has been going on since mid-June. Yes, this means that WP will likely be just a memory for werbert.

One has so far been 5 years (sound) though a few others have popped up that stem from that, being physics, and I've been beginning to think a lot about maths. I know music and sound is a lifetime obsession of mine.

Weekly obsessions involve over-thinking on things I've read, such as the singularity effect, obsessing over that one made me go nuts
