My visual memory is very good. I always learn topographical maps very fast and I can recall many visual(and audial) details of events in the past.
But for some reason I can never remember where for example I left my bike, or keys, or anything for that matter. I keep constantly asking friends how they remember this sort of thing, and they say they just do. I the meantime, I come up with a lot of ways to be able to memorize. Like making a map with a point on it in my head. But I don't always remember to do these things.

Has anyone on here experienced similar problems?

kind of, but not really.
indeed, i rarely remember where i put my keys or *insert book/clothing piece/other item here*, but wen i need it, i just stand up and produce said item from its infernal hiding place without even searching for it, even if i forgot i had that item...
somehow, my memory on these things is completely subconcious, normally dormant to not take any brain capacity, but produced in a flash (like chuck flashing on the intersect) whenever it is needed

I lose things very often... that's why I try to keep everything in its place so that I can avoid that problem. :P

Yes. I usually put things down (or toss them somewhere) without thinking about it, even when I have specific places for things. Because I wasn't paying attention when I put something somewhere, I can't recall where I put it.

For the most part I put my things in the same place except there are those times where my mind is elsewhere and I am not paying attention where I am setting stuff down therefore my brain is not focused on the object.

Later on...panic panic...where did it go???

I figured out to force myself to pay attention while setting stuff down. Come up with your own way of letting your brain know where the object is.

After a while it turns into a subconscious task.

Yes, especially my keys! Others have said, but make an inventory (or have someone who is close to you help you with) what you constantly are misplacing, and make a place for them to be at all times when not on your person. Avoid (if possible) distractions when p[lacing your items in their "place". For me, the key bowl inside the front door is the place for my keys when I walk in the front door, but when the routine is varied in the slightest (e.g. my kids grab me and pull me to see something they have done that day, I have to get dressed quickly to go back out after getting home from work), they invariably come up missing again. I wouldn't say it becomes second nature or rote, you have to concentrate on the established routine, and then you can let your mind looser. Loving and understanding family is also a key; without that, you would rather be alone so you don't lose stuff and have to keep putting out your own fires.

Yes, I'm having a lot of trouble with that. :P

It's true that I often don't pay attention when I put things somewhere, though my keys are actually not a problem anymore. I fixed that by making a place where I always hang them. But I can't always settle my bike in the same place, because other people are being mean and take my place! :)

I can understand that, point is that when I don't pay attention I am not looking well and if I am not looking well I cannot make an oversight in my head of where my bike is, so I might know what it looks like next to my bike, but I can still not remember where it is in my range.
